Vaikasi Visakam (Vaishaka Vishakam) is the most sacred day of the year for seeking the divine blessings of Bhagwan Subrahmanya, the six-faced Shanmukha and eternal warrior of dharma. This auspicious day arrives when the powerful Vishakha Nakshatra aligns with the Tamil month of Vaikasi, creating a rare cosmic window where the spiritual energy on earth reaches its peak. According to the Skanda Purana, this is the very day Bhagwan Kartikeya took His divine form from the sacred fire of Bhagwan Shiva, was nurtured by the six Krittika maidens and was appointed as the Deva Senapati, the commander of all celestial forces. In 2026, Vaikasi Visakam falls on 30 May during the Adhika Masa, a rare occurrence that greatly amplifies the spiritual merit of all pujas and sevas performed on this day. Devotees who offer prayers, perform Abhisheka or book a seva on this sacred occasion receive Bhagwan Murugan's grace for removing obstacles, dissolving Sarpa Dosha and Kuja Dosha, gaining courage and clarity, and progressing swiftly on the path of dharma. At Jyotirgamaya, we invite you to participate in the complete Shri Subrahmanya Seva and receive His divine blessings on this powerful day.
When Vishakha Nakshatra aligns with Vaishaka masa, cosmic Shakti peaks. Prayers offered on this tithi carry 100 times more power than ordinary days.
Puranas confirm Vaikasi Visakam as the divine day Bhagwan Skanda took form to destroy Tarakasura and protect the three worlds from adharma.
Shri Subrahmanya is the presiding Bhagwan of Sarpa Shakti. Worship on Vaikasi Visakam dissolves Sarpa Dosha, Kuja Dosha and ancestral karmic blocks.
The Vedic tradition links Bhagwan Kartikeya with Mangala (Mars). Performing His seva on this day pacifies Mars afflictions and brings confidence and victory.
What is Vaikasi Visakam?
Vaikasi Visakam (also written as Vaishaka Vishakam) is one of the holiest days in the Vedic and Tamil Shaiva tradition. It falls every year when the Vishakha Nakshatra coincides with the lunar month of Vaishaka (called Vaikasi in Tamil). This rare and sacred alignment makes the day extremely powerful for worship, seva and devotional practices.
On this day, Bhagwan Subrahmanya, known by many divine names including Murugan, Kartikeya, Skanda, Shanmukha and Senthil Andavan, is worshipped with great devotion across Bharat, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Sri Lanka and wherever Tamil and Shaiva traditions are followed.
According to Vedic astrology, Vishakha Nakshatra is ruled by Indra and Agni together. When this nakshatra aligns with the Vaishaka masa, the spiritual energy on earth is said to be at its peak for invoking Bhagwan Subrahmanya's blessings.
Why is Vaikasi Visakam Celebrated? The Puranic Story
The Skanda Purana and Shiva Maha Purana narrate the divine origin of Bhagwan Subrahmanya in great detail. In the ancient yugas, a powerful asura named Tarakasura performed intense tapas and received a boon from Bhagwan Brahma that only the son of Bhagwan Shiva could defeat him. As Bhagwan Shiva had no son at that time, Tarakasura became arrogant, terrorized all the devas and began ruling the three worlds with adharma.
The devas, led by Indra, approached Bhagwan Vishnu and Bhagwan Shiva for protection. In response to the divine crisis, Bhagwan Shiva channeled His divine fire, which was carried by Agni and Vayu, then placed into the sacred River Ganga. The Krittikas (the six divine maidens of the Pleiades star cluster, known as Krittika Nakshatra) received this divine fire and from it was born the six headed child Shanmukha, also called Kartikeya.
Bhagwan Kartikeya grew up under the care of the six Krittika maidens. He was appointed as the Deva Senapati, the commander of the celestial army. He then led the devas into battle, defeated Tarakasura and restored dharma in all the three worlds.
Vaikasi Visakam is thus celebrated as the divine manifestation day (Avatarana Dina) of Bhagwan Subrahmanya. The Vishakha Nakshatra under which He appeared is also the birth star of His divine mother Mata Parvati, making this day doubly auspicious and filled with both Shakti and Skanda energy.
Significance in Vedic Astrology
In Jyotisha Shastra, Bhagwan Kartikeya is the presiding deity (Adhidevata) of Mangala (Mars). He is also deeply connected with the Pleiades (Krittika Nakshatra), which forms the sixth and most active of His six heads.
Vishakha Nakshatra, under which He was born, is a dual nakshatra ruled by Indra and Agni. It is associated with the qualities of focused determination, burning away impurities and achieving victory through righteous effort. These qualities are perfectly reflected in the divine nature of Bhagwan Subrahmanya.
For devotees who have afflictions of Mangala (Mars) or Rahu Ketu in their kundali (birth chart), seeking Bhagwan Subrahmanya's grace on Vaikasi Visakam is especially recommended. The Skanda Purana states that sincere worship on this day helps reduce the negative effects of these graha doshas and brings clarity, courage and forward movement in life.
Shri Subrahmanya: Who is He?
Bhagwan Subrahmanya is the eternal warrior of dharma. He is the divine son of Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati. He is the younger brother of Bhagwan Ganesha. He is the husband of both Mata Valli (representing prakriti, the world of nature) and Mata Devasena (representing the divine, celestial grace).
He is called by many names:
Murugan in Tamil tradition, meaning the beautiful divine youth Kartikeya because He was raised by the Krittika maidens Skanda meaning He who was emanated from Bhagwan Shiva Shanmukha because He has six divine faces, each looking in one of the six directions, protecting all creation Kumara meaning the eternal youthful one Deva Senapati because He is the commander of all celestial forces Sarpa Rajendra because He is the presiding deity of serpent energy
In the tradition of Jnana (knowledge), Bhagwan Subrahmanya represents the highest spiritual wisdom. The story of Him teaching the meaning of the Pranava mantra (Om) to His own father Bhagwan Shiva is found in Kanda Puranam and is celebrated in Tamil literature. He is therefore also called Swaminatha, meaning the one who became the guru of Bhagwan Shiva Himself.
