As described in the Skanda Purana, worship offered to Devi Varalakshmi on this day is believed to grant heartfelt wishes, protect one’s family, and invite unending prosperity. JyotirGamaya will be performing the Varalakshmi Vratam Sevas, strictly following Vedic paddhati in our South Indian temple. Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Story of Shri Varalakshmi Vrata (Vratam)

The Legend: Devi Lakshmi Grants a Boon

The origin of the Varalakshmi Vratam is mentioned in the Skanda Purana: Once, a devout woman named Charumati, living in Magadha (modern-day Bihar), was known for her piety, devotion to her husband, and service to her in-laws. Pleased with her dedication, Devi Lakshmi appeared in her dream and instructed her to perform a special Vrat (ritual fast) on a Friday in the month of Shravana (July - August).

Charumati followed the instructions and performed the Vratam with full faith. Miraculously, after the Puja, immense wealth and prosperity flowed into her household and those of other women who joined her. Since then, the practice of observing Varalakshmi Vratam spread across regions as a means to invoke Varalakshmi - the boon giving form of Lakshmi.

Who is Varalakshmi?

Vara” means boon and “Lakshmi” is the Goddess of Wealth, Fortune, and Prosperity. Varalakshmi is a benevolent aspect of Lakshmi who grants boons to sincere devotees. She represents the Ashta Lakshmis (eight forms of Lakshmi), each symbolizing:

  • Dhana Lakshmi (wealth)
  • Dhanya Lakshmi (agriculture and food)
  • Veera Lakshmi (courage)
  • Santana Lakshmi (children/progeny)
  • Vijaya Lakshmi (victory)
  • Aishwarya Lakshmi (prosperity)
  • Gaja Lakshmi (royal power)
  • Adi Lakshmi (primordial energy)

    2. The pot is adorned with a saree and face of the Devi.
  3. Puja and Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names) are chanted.
  4. Women tie a sacred thread (yellow or red) on their right hand.
  5. Naivedyam (food offerings) like sweets, fruits, and Pongal are offered.
  6. In some households, “Haldi-Kumkum” is shared with visiting women.
