Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Kaal Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Shri Shiva associated with time (Kala) and destruction of evil. Worship of Kaal Bhairav holds deep spiritual and ritualistic significance, especially on Kalashtami - the eighth day after the full moon each month, which is considered most auspicious for his worship.

Story of Kaal Bhairav (Kalabhairava Katha)

The most popular legend about Kaal Bhairav comes from the Shiva Purana:

The Curse of Brahma and Creation of Kalabhairava

Once, the trinity of gods - Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva - were debating who among them was the Supreme. During the discussion, Brahma became arrogant and claimed superiority. In his pride, he spoke disrespectfully about Shiva.

Angered by this, Bhagwan Shiva created Kaal Bhairava, a fierce form with dark complexion, terrifying appearance, and trident in hand. Kalabhairava appeared and immediately severed one of Brahma’s five heads as punishment for his arrogance.

However, since Brahma is a creator and his head is sacred, cutting it off was considered Brahmahatya (a great sin). As a result, Kaal Bhairav had to carry Brahma’s skull as a begging bowl (Kapala) and wander the world for penance. Eventually, his sin was absolved at Kashi (Varanasi), where the skull fell off, and Kaal Bhairav was freed from the curse.

Hence, Kashi is considered his eternal abode, and Kalabhairava is regarded as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi.

Significance of Kalabhairava

  1. Guardian of Time: Kalabhairava controls time (Kala). He teaches the importance of time management and spiritual discipline.
  2. Protector and Guardian: He guards the eight directions and protects devotees from negative forces, both physical and metaphysical.
  3. Dispeller of Fear: Worshipping Kalabhairava helps overcome fear, black magic, evil eye, and internal doubts or guilt.
  4. Initiator of Liberation (Moksha): He is believed to grant blessings of liberation, especially when worshipped in Varanasi.

Kalashtami & Its Importance

Kalashtami is observed on the 8th day (Ashtami tithi) of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) each month. The most powerful Kalashtami falls in the Margashirsha month (Nov–Dec), known as Mahakalabhairava Jayanti (the birth day of Kalabhairava).
