According to the Padma Purana, the sacred story of Utpatti Ekadashi reveals how Bhagwan Vishnu created the powerful Devi Ekadashi to protect the world from Adharma.
In the ancient times, there was a fierce demon named Mura, who terrorized the Devas and disturbed all spiritual beings. Even the Devas sought refuge in Bhagwan Vishnu. A great battle took place in which Bhagwan fought continuously with Mura for thousands of years. During this long battle, Bhagwan Vishnu entered a cave to rest for a short while. Seeing this, the demon tried to attack Him.
At that very moment, a radiant divine energy emerged from Bhagwan Vishnu’s body that is a powerful Devi with dazzling light. She fought Mura fiercely and destroyed him completely. When Bhagwan Vishnu woke up, He was pleased to see that the Devi had defeated the demon.
Bhagwan Vishnu blessed Her saying, "You have appeared on the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight (Ekadashi Tithi), and You will be known as Devi Ekadashi. Whoever observes fast and worships Me on this sacred day will be freed from sins and attain Moksha." Thus, the day came to be known as Utpatti Ekadashi means the Divine Appearance Day of Devi Ekadashi, who grants purity, protection, and liberation to all devotees.
Observing Utpatti Ekadashi Vrat with devotion and performing Lakshmi Narayana Puja brings the blessings of Bhagwan Vishnu, removal of past karmic blocks, and peace in home and mind.
