Astrological Importance

Those facing ill effects of Shani in their horoscope (like Saturn Mahadasha, Sade Sati) observe this day to reduce suffering.

Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Shani Jayanti, also known as Shanishchara Jayanti, is the birth anniversary of Shri Shani Dev (Saturn) — the powerful deity who governs justice, karma, discipline, and trials in life. It is observed on Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month (May–June).

The Birth of Shri Shani Dev – The Katha

According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Shani Dev is the son of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhaya Devi (Shadow Goddess).

It is believed that when Chhaya gave birth to Shani, her intense penance and devotion to Bhagwan Shiva during pregnancy imbued the child with divine spiritual energy. As a result, Shani was born with a dark complexion and immense power.

Surya Dev, however, doubted the child and insulted Chhaya. Infuriated, Shani cast a powerful gaze upon Surya, which caused him to lose his brilliance. Eventually Bhagwan Shiva intervened, restoring Surya’s glow and acknowledging Shani’s greatness.

Bhagwan Shiva then blessed Shani Dev and gave him the role of the karmaphal data — the one who delivers the results of one’s actions (karma), both good and bad. Shani was placed as one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial influencers) and became the ruler of Saturday (Shanivar).

Benefits of Observing Shani Jayanti

  • Removes Obstacles: Shani’s blessings help overcome long-standing struggles, delays, and misfortunes.
  • Protection from Evil & Negativity: Performing rituals wards off evil eye, curses, and planetary afflictions.
  • Karmic Neutralization: Helps burn past negative karma and opens the path to spiritual upliftment.
  • Financial & Career Stability: Shani favors disciplined efforts; sincere prayers can stabilize professional and financial conditions.
  • Justice for the Wronged: Those who are wrongfully suffering or oppressed find spiritual support and justice through Shani's grace.

How to Observe Shani Jayanti?

  • Fasting (Vrat): Devotees observe a strict fast or consume only light food/fruits.
  • Worship of Shani Dev: Offerings include black sesame seeds, mustard oil, black clothes, and blue flowers.
  • Mantras & Chants:
    • Chant “ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः” (Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah) 108 times.
    • Recite Shani Stotra or Shani Chalisa.
  • Charity (Daan): Donate black items — like black cloth, urad dal, mustard oil, and shoes — especially to the poor, blind, or physically challenged.
  • Visit Shani Temples: Especially those dedicated to Shani Dev, like Shani Shingnapur (Maharashtra) or any dedicated Shani Temple near you. Participate in the online puja, if visiting Temple is not possible due to travel, health or other reasons.

Below is the significance and benefits of each of the sevas

Detailed Seva Description

1. Thailabhisheka (Abhisheka with Sesame Oil)

  • Significance:
    • Sesame oil (til ka tel) is considered the most sacred offering to Shri Shani Dev because it represents soothing energy, which helps pacify his intense, karmic influence.
    • The oil bath is symbolic of removing the “burning effects” of Shani’s harsh gaze and the karmic friction it causes.
  • Spiritual & Material Benefits:
    • Alleviates the malefic effects of Shani in one’s horoscope, especially during Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or Shani Mahadasha.
    • Helps to neutralize negativity, fear, financial losses, and chronic health issues.
    • Creates a protective aura and attracts divine justice and stability.
    • Brings peace of mind, emotional grounding, and reduces internal stress.

2. Panchamrut Abhisheka (with Milk, Curd, Honey, Sugar, Ghee)

Significance:

  • Panchamrut symbolizes purity, nourishment, and divine grace. While Thailabhisheka pacifies Shani’s harsh aspects, Panchamrut pleases his compassionate and just nature.
  • Each element:
    • Milk – Purity of thought
    • Curd – Fertility of karma
    • Honey – Sweetness of speech
    • Ghee – Strength and clarity
    • Sugar – Joy in righteous action

Spiritual & Material Benefits:

  • Helps soothe inner restlessness, anxiety, and frustration caused by Saturn’s delays.
  • Invokes positive karma, good fortune, and healing from deep-rooted karmic patterns.
  • Encourages mental clarity, good health, and moral discipline.
  • Ideal for those seeking long-term peace and upliftment, not just material relief.

3. Samarpan (Offerings) to Shani Dev

a. Tulasi Mala (Holy Basil Garland)

  • Significance: Although Tulasi is primarily dear to Bhagwan Vishnu, offering it to Shani Dev (as Vishnu’s devotee) symbolizes humility and purity of devotion.
  • Benefits:
    • Cleanses one’s aura and inner self.
    • Helps attract the grace of Vishnu through Shani, as Shani is a devout follower of Vishnu.
    • Promotes inner peace and self-control.

    b. Sesame Oil (Til Oil) & Sesame Seeds

  • Significance: These are Shani Dev’s favorite offerings. Sesame seeds symbolize protection and karmic absorption, while sesame oil reduces heat and negativity from one's karma.
  • Benefits:
    • Greatly reduces Shani dosha, brings relief from hardships.
    • Aids in legal matters, debt, job issues, and persistent struggles.
    • Useful in cleansing ancestral karmic burdens (pitru dosha).

c. Black Clothes

  • Significance: Black is the color associated with Saturn — representing the unknown, humility, and karma. Offering black cloth is symbolic of surrendering one’s ego and karma at Shani’s feet.
  • Benefits:
    • Protects from evil eye, gossip, jealousy, and malicious energy.
    • Supports stability in career, relationships, and health.
    • Attracts spiritual resilience and maturity.

    d. Blue Flowers (Like Aparajita or Neel Pushp)

  • Significance: Blue is the planet Saturn’s vibrational color — it resonates with truth, justice, and inner discipline.
  • Benefits:
    • Offering blue flowers symbolizes calming Shani’s gaze and softening his karmic tests.
    • Brings blessings of endurance, wisdom, and patience.
    • Encourages growth through discipline and perseverance.

Performing these sevas is not about escaping karma, but about facing it with grace, surrender, and responsibility.

When done with true devotion, humility, and regularity, these offerings:

  • Help transform suffering into spiritual strength,
  • Enhance faith and patience in life’s journey,
  • And invite Shani Dev’s blessings for justice, protection, and long-term peace.

Choice of Sevas: You may choose one/two/all the sevas according to your wish (Ichchanusar) and capacity (Shaktyanusar). What truly matters to Bhagwan is the sincerity of your bhakti (devotion). Devotees are kindly requested to take a moment to offer heartfelt prayers before proceeding to book the seva. Let this be an expression of your sincere bhakti and humble offering at Bhagwan’s divine feet.
