Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Nirjala Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi (11th lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the month of Jyeshtha (May–June). It is considered the most powerful and sacred among all 24 (or 26) Ekadashis in the year. The word ‘Nirjala’ means ‘without water’, and thus this Ekadashi involves a strict fast without food or even watera complete upavasa.

The Story (Katha) of Nirjala Ekadashi

Ekadashi, observed on the 11th day of both the waxing and waning lunar phases, holds deep spiritual significance in Sanatana Dharma. It is a sacred day dedicated to worshipping Bhagwan Vishnu, when devotees observe fasting, prayer, and self-discipline to purify the body, mind, and soul. According to legend, Ekadashi, personified as a divine energy, emerged from Bhagwan Vishnu to destroy sins and grant liberation. Observing Ekadashi is said to wash away past karmas, grant inner peace, and accelerate one’s spiritual evolution. Fasting on this day enhances sattvic (pure) qualities, controls desires, and aligns the devotee with divine consciousness. The merit earned on Ekadashi is believed to surpass that of even grand yajnas (sacrifices), making it one of the most potent observances to seek Bhagwan Vishnu’s grace, material blessings, and ultimately moksha (liberation).

The Legend from the Mahabharata

According to the Mahabharata, the sage Vyasa narrated this katha to Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers.

Bhima’s Dilemma

Bhima was known for his great physical strength — and also his immense appetite. While his brothers, mother Kunti, and wife Draupadi regularly observed all Ekadashis by fasting, Bhima found it impossible to do so due to his hunger.

He approached sage Vyasa, asking if there was any single Ekadashi that could give the same merits as all 24 Ekadashis combined. Vyasa advised him to observe Nirjala Ekadashi, even if just once a year, with complete devotion and without food or water.

Despite the difficulty, Bhima determinedly undertook the Nirjala fast and successfully completed it. As a result, he received Bhagwan Vishnu's blessings and gained the spiritual merit of all other Ekadashis combined.

Thus, Nirjala Ekadashi is also called “Bhimaseni Ekadashi”.

Benefits of Observing Nirjala Ekadashi

  1. Spiritual Rewards: Attains the punya (merit) of all Ekadashis in the year and helps in spiritual purification and evolution of the soul
  2. Forgiveness of Sins: Even grave sins committed knowingly or unknowingly are believed to be forgiven
  3. Protection from Negativity: Ensures divine protection from negative influences, diseases, and evil forces
  4. Health & Longevity: Enhances self-control and cleansing of the body and mind, promoting longevity
  5. Blessings from Bhagwan Vishnu: Grants material prosperity and divine grace in both this life and beyond

How to Observe Nirjala Ekadashi

  • Complete Nirjala Fast: No food and no water from sunrise on Ekadashi till sunrise the next day (Dwadasi). If health does not permit, a partial fast with fruits or water may be done with devotion
  • Worship Bhagwan Vishnu: Offer tulsi leaves, incense, diyas, bhajans, and Vishnu Sahasranama
  • Charity (Daan): Donate water, food, clothes, fans, and essentials to the poor — especially during the hot month of Jyeshtha
  • Reading Scriptures: Read or listen to Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Purana, or the Nirjala

JyotirGamaya will be conducting Vishesha Ekadashi sevas to Bhagwan Shri Mahavishnu along with Sridevi and Bhudevi on this sacred day of Ekadashi, when the divine energies are at their peak.

Each item offered carries deep symbolic meaning and spiritual benefits. On Ekadashi, grains and heavy food are avoided even for Naivedya, since it's a day of sattvic elevation. Hence, fruits, dry fruits, and coconut are the most appropriate offerings  - aligning with both scriptural guidance and energetic purity.

Significance:

It represents purity, prosperity, and spiritual awakening.
In many traditions, coconut is offered before any auspicious beginning and is also placed atop Kalash during Vishnu puja.
  • Fruits:Fruits are considered natural sattvic offerings - pure, nourishing, and given in their most natural form.
They symbolize the fruit of our actions (karma phala) being surrendered to God.
