Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Ekadashi, observed on the 11th day of both the waxing and waning lunar phases, holds deep spiritual significance in Sanatana Dharma. It is a sacred day dedicated to worshipping Bhagwan Vishnu, when devotees observe fasting, prayer, and self-discipline to purify the body, mind, and soul. According to legend, Ekadashi, personified as a divine energy, emerged from Bhagwan Vishnu to destroy sins and grant liberation. Observing Ekadashi is said to wash away past karmas, grant inner peace, and accelerate one’s spiritual evolution. Fasting on this day enhances sattvic (pure) qualities, controls desires, and aligns the devotee with divine consciousness. The merit earned on Ekadashi is believed to surpass that of even grand yajnas (sacrifices), making it one of the most potent observances to seek Bhagwan Vishnu’s grace, material blessings, and ultimately moksha (liberation).

Mohini Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi (11th day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Vaishakha (April–May). It is a day dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, and is especially revered for its power to destroy sins and grant liberation (moksha). Here's a full account of the story (Katha) behind Mohini Ekadashi, along with its significance and benefits of observing it.

Story (Katha) of Mohini Ekadashi

The story of Mohini Ekadashi is narrated in the Kurma Purana, where Bhagwan Shri Krishna tells the tale to Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava.

Once upon a time, a pious king named Dyutimana ruled the kingdom of Bhadravati. He was born in the lineage of the Moon god (Chandravansh). A Vaishya (merchant) named Dhanapala lived in his kingdom, renowned for his devotion, charity, and compassion. He was a true devotee of BhagwanVishnu and helped the poor, built temples, and educated the unlettered. Dhanapala had five sons, but the youngest one, Dhrishtabuddhi, was immoral, addicted to wine, women, and gambling. He wasted his father’s wealth and brought disgrace to the family.

Despite repeated attempts to reform him, Dhrishtabuddhi remained on the path of sin. Eventually, his father banished him from the house. Homeless and destitute, he wandered in the forests and suffered greatly. One day, in a deeply repentant state, Dhrishtabuddhi came across the hermitage of the great sage Kaundinya. Seeing his misery, the sage took pity and advised him to observe the fast of Mohini Ekadashi, explaining that it was powerful enough to wash away even the most heinous sins.

Dhrishtabuddhi followed the sage’s guidance and observed the Mohini Ekadashi fast with full devotion. As a result, his sins were cleansed, and he transformed into a virtuous person. In time, he attained liberation and was taken to Vaikuntha, the abode of Bhagwan Vishnu.

Significance of Mohini Ekadashi

  • Mohini Avatar of Vishnu: The Ekadashi is named after Bhagwan Vishnu’s Mohini form — a divine enchantress. During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Vishnu took this form to distribute the nectar of immortality (amrita) among the gods, ensuring the demons didn’t receive it. This form symbolizes illusion (Maya) and the divine's power to protect dharma.
  • Destruction of Sins: According to scriptures, observing Mohini Ekadashi absolves even grave sins.
  • Path to Liberation: This Ekadashi is believed to help a person on the path to moksha, especially those caught in cycles of bad karma.
  • Emphasis on Detachment: It teaches that even the worst sinner can reform through devotion, self-discipline, and surrender to God.

Benefits of Observing Mohini Ekadashi Vrat (Fast)

  1. Spiritual Purification: Cleanses one’s soul of past sins and negative karma.
  2. Improves Mental Discipline: Fasting and prayer enhance focus, willpower, and inner peace.
  3. Promotes Good Health: The Ekadashi fast (usually water-only or fruit-only) gives the digestive system rest and detoxifies the body.
  4. Peace and Prosperity: Observing this vrat brings peace in family life and helps one align with dharma.
  5. Attainment of Moksha: Scriptures say those who observe Mohini Ekadashi with devotion will not be reborn and will attain liberation.

How to Observe Mohini Ekadashi?

  • Fasting: Devotees avoid grains, pulses, and rice; some fast completely or take fruits/milk.
  • Worship: Special pujas and Vishnu Sahasranama chanting are done; idols of Vishnu are bathed, adorned, and worshipped.
  • Staying Awake (Jagran): Some stay awake all night singing bhajans and engaging in spiritual activities.
  • Charity: Donations to Brahmins, cows, or the needy are considered especially meritorious.

  • Strengthens the power of the soul (Atma Bal) and promotes spiritual awakening.
  • Creates a shield of divine protection around the devotee.

6. Naivedya (Bhog) offering of coconut & fruits

Offering Naivedya or Bhog to Bhagwan Shri Mahavishnu along with Sridevi and Bhudevi, especially on Ekadashi, is an essential and sacred part of seva. Each item offered carries deep symbolic meaning and spiritual benefits. On Ekadashi, grains and heavy food are avoided even for Naivedya, since it's a day of sattvic elevation. Hence, fruits, dry fruits, and coconut are the most appropriate offerings  - aligning with both scriptural guidance and energetic purity.

Significance:

  • Coconut (Sriphala – the Divine Fruit):
    • Coconut is known as "Shriphala", meaning "fruit of the gods".
    • Symbolizes self-surrender — the hard shell (ego) is broken to offer the pure white heart (the soul) to the Lord.
    • It represents purity, prosperity, and spiritual awakening.
    • In many traditions, coconut is offered before any auspicious beginning and is also placed atop Kalash during Vishnu puja.
  • Fruits:
    • Fruits are considered natural sattvic offerings - pure, nourishing, and given in their most natural form.
    • They symbolize the fruit of our actions (karma phala) being surrendered to God.
    • Fruits represent gratitude and humble acknowledgment of the Bhagwan as the provider of all nourishment.

Generally the below Fruits are offered for Naivedya on Ekadashi:

  • Bananas (symbol of humility and fertility)
  • Pomegranate (symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity)
  • Apple or Pear (symbolic of sweetness and clarity)
  • Grapes or Dates (for divine sweetness and long life)
  • Dry fruits like almonds, raisins, and cashews (symbolize strength and richness)
