Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Ekadashi, observed on the 11th day of both the waxing and waning lunar phases, holds deep spiritual significance in Sanatana Dharma. It is a sacred day dedicated to worshipping Bhagwan Vishnu, when devotees observe fasting, prayer, and self-discipline to purify the body, mind, and soul. According to legend, Ekadashi, personified as a divine energy, emerged from Bhagwan Vishnu to destroy sins and grant liberation. Observing Ekadashi is said to wash away past karmas, grant inner peace, and accelerate one’s spiritual evolution. Fasting on this day enhances sattvic (pure) qualities, controls desires, and aligns the devotee with divine consciousness. The merit earned on Ekadashi is believed to surpass that of even grand yajnas (sacrifices), making it one of the most potent observances to seek Bhagwan Vishnu’s grace, material blessings, and ultimately moksha (liberation).

The Story (Katha) of Karnika Ekadashi

The story of Karnika Ekadashi is primarily found in the Bhavishyottara Purana, where Bhagwan Shri Krishna narrates its significance to King Yudhishthira.

Once, a great and pious king named Dhundhumara, who ruled during the Satya Yuga, was afflicted with a deadly curse. In search of liberation and relief, he went to the forest and performed intense penance. Eventually, a divine sage advised him to observe Karnika Ekadashi with utmost devotion.

By observing this vrat (fast) and staying awake on the night of Ekadashi, King Dhundhumara was relieved of his curse and attained peace, prosperity, and liberation. The sage emphasized that this Ekadashi had the power to destroy sins equal to killing a Brahmin, and to bless devotees with moksha (liberation).

Significance of Karnika Ekadashi

  • Devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu: As with all Ekadashis, Karnika Ekadashi is primarily dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe. It is a day to deepen spiritual practice and focus on divine consciousness.
  • Purification of Sins: Observing this vrat is believed to purify the devotee from past sins and karmic debts.
  • Spiritual Awakening: The vrat encourages detachment from material desires, promoting introspection, meditation, and self-discipline.
  • Commemorates King Dhundhumara’s Liberation: His story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of devotion and penance.

Divine Benefits of Observing Karnika Ekadashi

  • Cleanses Lifetimes of Sin: Fasting and praying on Karnika Ekadashi is said to burn away the sins of past lives, even those as grave as harming a Brahmin — something dire in Vedic tradition.
  • Gateway to Moksha (Liberation): Those who sincerely observe this vrat are blessed with the grace of Bhagwan Vishnu, helping them break free from the cycle of birth and death.
  • Brings Peace and Mental Clarity: Devotees often experience a deep sense of calm, focus, and inner balance. The mind becomes more aligned with spiritual truth.
  • Enhances Devotion and Discipline: Observing Ekadashi strengthens one’s spiritual discipline, sharpens the willpower, and deepens the connection with the Divine.
  • Blesses the Home with Prosperity: Those who fast and offer prayers with devotion are believed to attract divine blessings that remove obstacles and bring peace and abundance into their household.
  • Improves Health and Vitality: The fasting and simplicity of this day promote bodily detoxification and mental purity, supporting both physical and spiritual wellness.
  • Removes Fear and Suffering: Just as King Dhundhumara was freed from his curse and suffering, devotees believe that observing Karnika Ekadashi helps overcome fears, challenges, and misfortunes in life.
  • Powerful Day for Prayers and Sankalpas: Wishes made with a pure heart on this day - especially spiritual ones - are more likely to be fulfilled by divine grace.

How to Observe Karnika Ekadashi

  • Fasting: Some observe a nirjala vrat (without water), while others may have fruits or milk.
  • Worship Bhagwan Vishnu: Perform Vishnu puja with tulsi leaves, incense, and chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • Stay awake (Jagaran): Chant bhajans and read scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Purana.
  • Charity and Service: Donating food, clothes, and helping the needy is highly meritorious on this day.
  • Dwadashi Parana: Break the fast on the next day (Dwadashi) after sunrise with sattvic food.

JyotirGamaya will be conducting Vishesha Ekadashi sevas to Bhagwan Shri Mahavishnu along with Sridevi and Bhudevi on this sacred day of Ekadashi, when the divine energies are at their peak.

6. Naivedya (Bhog) offering of coconut & fruits

Offering Naivedya or Bhog to Bhagwan Shri Mahavishnu along with Sridevi and Bhudevi, especially on Ekadashi, is an essential and sacred part of seva. Each item offered carries deep symbolic meaning and spiritual benefits. On Ekadashi, grains and heavy food are avoided even for Naivedya, since it's a day of sattvic elevation. Hence, fruits, dry fruits, and coconut are the most appropriate offerings  - aligning with both scriptural guidance and energetic purity.

Significance:

  • Coconut (Sriphala – the Divine Fruit):Coconut is known as "Shriphala", meaning "fruit of the gods".
Symbolizes self-surrender — the hard shell (ego) is broken to offer the pure white heart (the soul) to the Lord.
It represents purity, prosperity, and spiritual awakening.
In many traditions, coconut is offered before any auspicious beginning and is also placed atop Kalash during Vishnu puja.
  • Fruits:Fruits are considered natural sattvic offerings - pure, nourishing, and given in their most natural form.
They symbolize the fruit of our actions (karma phala) being surrendered to God.
Fruits represent gratitude and humble acknowledgment of the Bhagwan as the provider of all nourishment.

Generally the below Fruits are offered for Naivedya on Ekadashi:

  • Bananas (symbol of humility and fertility)
  • Pomegranate (symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity)
  • Apple or Pear (symbolic of sweetness and clarity)
  • Grapes or Dates (for divine sweetness and long life)
  • Dry fruits like almonds, raisins, and cashews (symbolize strength and richness)

Powerful Blessings from Combined Sevas on Ekadashi

When all these sevas are performed together on Ekadashi to Bhagwan Vishnu along with Sridevi and Bhudevi:

  • Body gets purified through fasting and Abhisheka.
  • Mind gets stabilized through Tulasi offerings and Sahasranama.
  • Heart gets elevated through Alankara and Aarti.
  • Soul aligns with divine through devotion and surrender.

Choice of Sevas: You may choose one/two/all the sevas according to your wish (Ichchanusar) and capacity (Shaktyanusar). What truly matters to Bhagwan is the sincerity of your bhakti (devotion). Devotees are kindly requested to take a moment to offer heartfelt prayers before proceeding to book the seva. Let this be an expression of your sincere bhakti and humble offering at Bhagwan’s divine feet.
