Guru Purnima is a sacred Hindu festival celebrated to honor and express gratitude towards spiritual teachers, mentors, and gurus. It typically falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha. The word "Guru" in Sanskrit means "dispeller of darkness," emphasizing the role of a guru in guiding disciples on their spiritual journey and illuminating their path with wisdom and knowledge. Guru Purnima is dedicated to honoring teachers and spiritual guides (gurus).
Story of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima marks the birth of Ved Vyasa, the sage who compiled the Vedas, authored the Mahabharata, and wrote the 18 Puranas. Veda Vyas is revered as the Adi Guru (original teacher) in Hindu tradition. The day is also known as Vyasa Purnima in his honor.
The significance of Guru Purnima lies in its recognition of the invaluable role played by Gurus in shaping individuals spiritually, intellectually, and morally. It is a time when disciples offer their respects, seek blessings, and reflect on the teachings that have been imparted to them. By honoring the guru-disciple relationship, Guru Purnima reinforces the importance of learning, humility, and continuous self-improvement. The festival also serves as a reminder to express gratitude and appreciation for all forms of knowledge and wisdom that enrich our lives. On this special day, one may express gratitude to all the Gurus who have enlightened one's life, starting from one's mother, teachers, and people who have guided and mentored through various milestones or circumstances, and seek their Blessings.
In our Hindu tradition, Guru is the third most important person in one’s life, after the parents. (1. Matru Devobhava 2. Pitru devobhava 3. Guru Devobhava)
