Sevas we offer for Navaratri Vishesha Durga Saptashati Parayanam Seva

Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

What Is Navaratri Vishesha Durga Saptashati Parayanam?

Durga Saptashati Parayanam is the sacred recital of the 700 shlokas of Devi Mahatmyam, which is part of the Markandeya Purana. It is also known as Chandi Path, Chandi Parayanam, Saptashati Path and Sri Durga Saptashati. During Navaratri, the recital is done with sankalpa, Devi puja and Mangalaarti, and it is believed to be one of the most powerful ways to seek the blessings of Devi Durga.

Devi Mahatmyam tells how Devi took the form of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati to destroy fear, ego and evil. When it is read with devotion in Navaratri, it is believed to bring protection, strength and peace to the sevakartha and the whole family.

Spiritual and Vedic Significance of Saptashati Parayanam in Navaratri

Navaratri is the time when the Shakti of Devi is said to be most awake. Our scriptures describe Devi as the power behind creation, protection and renewal, and Devi Mahatmyam is the main text that praises her in this way.

The text itself shows the importance of certain days. In the Phalashruti (the chapter that explains the fruits of reading), Devi says that those who listen to her glory with devotion on Ashtami and Navami receive her protection. This is why Ashtami and Navami are the most loved days for Saptashati Parayanam in Navaratri. Dashami is Vijayadashami, the day of victory, and it completes the nine nights with a sense of success and peace. Some key points:

  • Devi Mahatmyam has 13 chapters and 700 shlokas, which gives the name Saptashati.
  • It was told by Sage Medhas to King Suratha and a merchant named Samadhi, who were both in sorrow and found peace through Devi's worship.
  • It is recited with Kavacham, Argala and Keelaka, which are the traditional prayers that come before the main chapters.

The Three Charitras and 13 Chapters Explained Simply

Devi Mahatmyam is divided into three parts called charitras. Each part praises one form of Devi.

  • Prathama Charitra (Chapter 1) - Mahakali: Devi wakes Bhagwan Vishnu from his deep sleep so that he can destroy the demons Madhu and Kaitabha. This part teaches us that when Devi wakes up, even the hardest problems end.
  • Madhyama Charitra (Chapters 2 to 4) - Mahalakshmi: Devi takes the form of Mahishasuramardini and destroys the demon Mahishasura. This part is linked with strength, prosperity and victory over enemies.
  • Uttama Charitra (Chapters 5 to 13) - Mahasaraswati: Devi destroys Shumbha, Nishumbha, Chanda, Munda and Raktabija. This part includes the famous Devi Stuti and the Narayani Stuti, and it is linked with wisdom, devotion and moksha. In the last chapter, King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi receive the boons they wished for.
