Kamala Ekadashi is one of the most sacred Ekadashis dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. In 2026, it falls on a rare and powerful day, Adhika Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi with Hasta Nakshatra. Adhika Maas appears once every 3 years and is entirely dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, meaning every act of devotion on this day gives double the punya. According to the Padma Purana, observing this vrat with a sincere heart destroys sins of many lifetimes and opens the path to moksha.
Kamala Ekadashi in Adhika Maas is extremely rare. Any vrat or puja done in this month gives double the punya compared to a regular month.
This year Ekadashi falls under Hasta Nakshatra - ruled by Surya Dev. This adds a powerful astrological strength to the vrat and makes prayers more fruitful.
Padma Purana says Kamala Ekadashi destroys sins of many lifetimes. In Adhika Maas, this effect is considered many times stronger by ancient rishis.
Adhika Maas is fully dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. Kamala Ekadashi in this month is the most auspicious day to seek His blessings and moksha.
What is Kamala Ekadashi? (Rare Occurrence in 2026 · Adhika Jyeshtha Maas)
Kamala Ekadashi is one of the most sacred and powerful Ekadashis in the entire Hindu calendar. It falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (the eleventh day of the bright fortnight) of a specific sacred month. The name "Kamala" comes from Devi Kamala, one of the most beloved names of Devi Lakshmi, the divine consort of Bhagwan Vishnu. Unlike regular Ekadashis that come every month, Kamala Ekadashi is considered to be in a class of its own. The Padma Purana, one of the eighteen great Mahapuranas, speaks at length about this Ekadashi and says that observing it with complete devotion and sincerity is more meritorious than performing a thousand Ashwamedha Yagyas.
In 2026, Kamala Ekadashi is even more special. It falls during Adhika Jyeshtha Maas, the rare extra (leap) month that appears in the Hindu lunar calendar once every 3 years. Adhika Maas is entirely dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, which means this Ekadashi carries double the spiritual power this year.
कमला एकादशी व्रतं सर्व पाप विनाशनम् । "The Kamala Ekadashi vrat destroys all sins and bestows liberation upon the devotee." - Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda.
Whether you are observing this vrat for the first time or have been doing so for years, 2026 offers a rare and golden opportunity to receive the full blessings of both Bhagwan Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi on the same sacred day.
Kamala Ekadashi 2026 - Date & Tithi Details
This year, Kamala Ekadashi falls under a rare and auspicious combination of tithi, nakshatra, and maas. Here are the complete details:
The Hasta Nakshatra that rules this day is governed by Surya Dev (the Sun). Hasta means "the hand" and symbolizes skill, blessings, and divine grace. When Ekadashi falls under Hasta Nakshatra, ancient Jyotish shastra considers it extremely auspicious for prayer, giving, and fasting. The combination of Adhika Maas + Shukla Ekadashi + Hasta Nakshatra makes the 2026 Kamala Ekadashi one of the rarest and most powerful spiritual days in recent memory.
Why Adhika Maas Makes Kamala Ekadashi 2026 Extra Powerful
What is Adhika Maas? Adhika Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas, is the extra month added to the Hindu lunar calendar approximately every 3 years to keep it aligned with the solar calendar. This month has no corresponding solar month and is therefore entirely dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu (Purushottam).
Ancient scriptures, including the Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana, say that any vrat, puja, dana (charity), or spiritual practice done during Adhika Maas gives double or even triple the punya compared to a regular month. Bhagwan Vishnu himself is said to watch over every devotee who performs sadhana during this month.
The Meeting of Adhika Maas and Kamala Ekadashi
When Kamala Ekadashi, already one of the most powerful Ekadashis, falls within Adhika Maas, the result is an extraordinarily rare and blessed combination. The saints and rishis of ancient India called such a meeting a Yoga that is a divine alignment that does not happen every year or even every decade.
In 2026, Kamala Ekadashi arrives in Adhika Jyeshtha Maas. Jyeshtha itself is a significant month, it is governed by Bhagwan Vishnu and is associated with the month of the longest days, strength, and spiritual clarity. Adding the Adhika dimension to this month makes every spiritual act performed in it especially powerful. For devotees who have been waiting for the right moment to begin a serious Vishnu bhakti practice, to ask for moksha, to pray for the health of their family, or to seek forgiveness for past mistakes - this is that moment.
The Vishnu Purana says: "In Adhika Maas, even a simple namaskara to Bhagwan Vishnu gives the fruit of a hundred yagyas. Then what can be said of a full Ekadashi vrat?"
Kamala Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Every Ekadashi vrat is incomplete without listening to or reading its Vrat Katha. The following katha is taken from the Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda, where Bhagwan Vishnu himself narrates this story to Yudhishthira Maharaja.
Long ago, in the kingdom of Mahishmati, there lived a righteous king named Kartaviryarjuna. He was powerful, just, and devoted to Bhagwan Vishnu. His kingdom was prosperous and his people were happy. However, in one of his previous births, he had unknowingly committed many sins - sins that kept the doors of moksha closed for him even after many lifetimes of good deeds. One day, a great sage named Kaudinya visited the king's court. The king welcomed him with great respect, offered him a seat of honour, and asked him humbly, "O great sage, I have performed many yagyas, given much dana, and ruled my kingdom with dharma. Yet I feel that something is missing. What is the one thing that can truly free a person from all sins and lead them to moksha?"
The sage smiled gently and said,"O King, you speak the truth. No amount of wealth, yagyas, or worldly good deeds alone can wash away the deep karmic seeds of past lives. But there is one vrat so powerful that it destroys all sins without exception. That vrat is called Kamala Ekadashi." The sage then explained the full significance of this Ekadashi. He said, "Kamala Ekadashi falls on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the special month designated by Bhagwan Vishnu. On this day, Goddess Kamala (Lakshmi) herself descended to the earth from Vaikuntha and asked Bhagwan Vishnu what vrat a person can do to become truly free. Bhagwan Vishnu smiled and said, 'The one who fasts on this Ekadashi, worships me with Tulasi and lotus, listens to my glories, and spends the night in my devotion and I myself will come and remove all their karmic burdens. I will hold their hand and lead them to Vaikuntha after their time on earth is done.'"
Hearing this, King Kartaviryarjuna observed the Kamala Ekadashi vrat with complete devotion fasting from Dashami sunset, spending the entire Ekadashi night in prayer, listening to Vishnu's katha, and breaking his fast the next Dwadashi morning only after offering dana. By the grace of Bhagwan Vishnu, all his accumulated sins were destroyed, his family received divine blessings, and upon leaving his body at the end of his life, he attained Vaikuntha. Such is the greatness of Kamala Ekadashi. Even listening to this katha with a pure heart is said to give the merit of donating one thousand cows.

Kamala Ekadashi 2026 - Your Questions Answered
Here are the most commonly asked questions about Kamala Ekadashi:
When is Kamala Ekadashi in 2026?
Kamala Ekadashi 2026 falls on Adhika Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi with Hasta Nakshatra. This year it occurs in Adhika Maas, the rare extra month making it an exceptionally powerful Ekadashi. The fast begins at Dashami sunset and ends on Dwadashi after sunrise.
What is the meaning of Kamala Ekadashi?
Kamala means lotus and it is also one of the most beautiful names of Goddess Lakshmi. This Ekadashi is named after Goddess Kamala because on this day she herself descended to earth and asked Bhagwan Vishnu how devotees can achieve liberation. The vrat that Bhagwan Vishnu described in response to her question is what we call Kamala Ekadashi.
Is Kamala Ekadashi the same as Devshayani Ekadashi or Parivartini Ekadashi?
No. Kamala Ekadashi is separate and distinct from Devshayani (Ashadh Shukla) and Parivartini (Bhadrapada Shukla) Ekadashis. In 2026, Kamala Ekadashi specifically refers to the Ekadashi of Adhika Jyeshtha Maas Shukla Paksha is a rare combination that occurs because of the extra leap month this year.
Can Pregnant women, elderly people, or those with illness can observe this vrat?
Yes, but with modifications. Pregnant women, elderly devotees, and those with medical conditions should not do a complete fast if it affects their health. They can eat fruits and vrat-appropriate food, offer prayers, and participate in the puja. The sincerity and devotion behind the vrat matters most to Bhagwan Vishnu. Always consult your doctor before fasting if you have any health conditions.
Why is Tulasi so important in Kamala Ekadashi Puja?
Tulasi is called "Haripriya", the most beloved of Bhagwan Vishnu (Hari). The Padma Purana says that offering a single Tulasi leaf to Bhagwan Vishnu with devotion is greater than giving gold and jewels. On Ekadashi, a day especially sacred to Bhagwan Vishnu, Tulasi becomes even more important. Tulasi-Pushpa Archana (offering Tulasi with Vishnu's 108 names) is the highest individual offering one can make on this day.
What happens if I break the Ekadashi fast accidentally?
If you accidentally eat something forbidden during the vrat, do not feel discouraged or guilty. Offer a sincere apology to Bhagwan Vishnu in prayer and continue the rest of the day with devotion. The Vishnu Purana says that Bhagwan Vishnu looks at the sincerity of the heart. You can also observe the next Ekadashi with extra care. Never give up a spiritual practice due to one mistake.
What is Adhika Maas and why does it make the vrat more powerful?
Adhika Maas (also called Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas) is the extra month added to the Hindu lunar calendar every 2 to 3 years. This month is fully dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. Scriptures including the Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana say that any spiritual practice such as vrat, puja, dana, or seva done in Adhika Maas gives double or triple the punya compared to the same practice in a regular month. When Kamala Ekadashi falls in Adhika Maas (as it does in 2026), the combined spiritual power is extraordinary and rare.
Can I book a seva at Jyotirgamaya if I live outside India?
