Planetary Upays for Marriage - The Complete Guide to What Each Planet Needs to Stop Blocking Your Path to Vivah
Across the thirty-nine blogs that preceded this one in this series, we explored every dimension of how the nine planets of Vedic Jyotish affect your marriage path.
We looked at doshas and yogas. At transits and dashas. At the navamsa chart's deeper picture. At ancestral karma and karmic debt between partners. At specific pujas like Swayamvar Parvati Puja, Katyayani Puja, Navgrah Shanti Puja, Mangal Dosha Nivaran Puja, Rudrabhishek and Maha Mrityunjaya Havan. And at the nakshatra's deeper map of compatibility.
This final blog in the series brings it all together in the most immediately practical form available.
Because knowledge is only useful when it becomes action.
And action in the Vedic tradition, when it comes to addressing planetary challenges in the marriage path, is called upay. The word upay means remedy, approach or the specific action that addresses a specific challenge. Upays are the practical tools of Jyotish. They are what you actually do, day by day, week by week, in alignment with the specific planetary challenges identified in your kundali.
This blog is a complete practical guide to those upays for all nine planets as they specifically affect marriage.
The Principles of Vedic Upay
Before going into the specific upays for each planet, it is important to understand the principles behind the upay system so that the remedies are approached with the right understanding and the right intention.
- Upays work through resonance, not magic. Every upay in the Vedic system works by creating a resonance between the person's sincere action and the planetary energy being addressed. Wearing a red gemstone resonates with Mangal's red energy. Chanting a specific mantra invokes the specific vibrational quality of the planet or deity being addressed. Making a specific donation creates a karmic resonance with the giving quality of the planetary energy. None of this is arbitrary. Each upay is specifically designed to create the most direct possible energetic resonance with the planet it addresses.
- Intention is as important as action. A mantra chanted mindlessly produces far less effect than the same mantra chanted with genuine understanding of what it is invoking and genuine intention for what it is seeking. A donation made out of obligation produces less karmic merit than the same donation made with genuine love for those being served. The quality of the intention multiplies or diminishes the effectiveness of the upay.
- Consistency creates power. Single-time upays are less effective than sustained practices. A mantra chanted 108 times on one Tuesday is less effective than the same mantra chanted 108 times every Tuesday for a year. The sustained consistency of genuine practice creates a deepening resonance that single practices cannot achieve.
- Upays address the planet's energy, not just its symptoms. The most effective upays work at the level of the planet's fundamental energy, not just its surface symptoms. Wearing blue for Shani on Saturdays is an upay. Genuinely serving those who are suffering, which is what Shani at his highest governs, is a deeper and more fundamentally effective upay. Both are valid. But the deeper the upay reaches into the actual quality of the planetary energy, the more profound its effect.
- Upays should always accompany sincere practical effort. Upays are not a replacement for sincere practical effort in the marriage search. They are a support to that effort. The person who performs all the right upays but makes no practical effort in their marriage search is not using the upay system correctly. The person who makes all the right practical efforts but neglects the spiritual dimension of the planetary challenges is equally incomplete. Both together create the optimal conditions for marriage.
Surya Upays for Marriage
When Surya creates marriage challenges: Surya creates marriage challenges primarily through ego conflicts and the difficulty of yielding that a strong or specifically placed Surya creates, as discussed in the blog on Dwadasha Aditya and ego conflicts in marriage. Additionally, Surya's combustion of Shukra, Asta Shukra discussed in an earlier blog, is a significant cause of marriage delay.
The most effective Surya upays for marriage:
- Daily Surya Namaskar at sunrise. Twelve rounds of Surya Namaskar performed facing the rising Sun every morning creates the most direct possible physical and energetic resonance with Surya's life-giving and self-illuminating energy. This practice balances the ego qualities that Surya creates in the marriage area by connecting the person to Surya's highest expression of dharmic clarity.
- Surya Arghya. Offering water toward the rising Sun from a copper vessel, with Om Suryaya Namah chanted with each offering, is one of the most ancient and most consistently effective daily Surya upays. Performed every morning, this simple practice creates a sustained positive relationship with Surya's energy.
- Aditya Hridayam recitation. The complete recitation of the Aditya Hridayam, the ancient Vedic hymn taught by Sage Agastya to Bhagwan Ram, creates a comprehensive resonance with Surya's most balanced and most dharmic expression. Daily recitation, particularly at sunrise, is the most powerful form.
- Sunday observance. Sunday is Surya's day. Wearing red or orange on Sundays, eating wheat-based food, donating wheat, copper and red cloth to temples or those in need, and spending time in genuine sunlight are all traditional Surya upays.
- Ruby (Manikya) gemstone. Ruby is Surya's gemstone and wearing it can significantly strengthen Surya's balanced expression in the kundali. However, ruby must only be worn after explicit recommendation from a learned Jyotishi based on the complete kundali assessment. Ruby is particularly helpful when Shukra is combust, as strengthening Surya's balanced expression can paradoxically create more space for Shukra to express its qualities without being overwhelmed.
- The practice of genuine humility. As discussed in the Surya and ego conflicts blog, the deepest Surya upay for marriage is the conscious practice of genuine humility, the specific willingness to yield to the partner's preferences and needs. This behavioral practice is the most direct counterbalance to the ego rigidity that creates Surya-related marriage challenges.
Chandra Upays for Marriage
When Chandra creates marriage challenges: Chandra creates marriage challenges through Chandra Dosha (various forms of Moon affliction creating emotional inconsistency), Vish Yoga (Saturn-Moon conjunction creating emotional heaviness), Kemdrum Yoga (Moon without planetary support creating emotional isolation) and general emotional instability that makes sustained intimate partnership difficult.
The most effective Chandra upays for marriage:
- Monday fast and puja. Monday is Chandra's day. Fasting on Mondays with devotion to Bhagwan Shiva as Chandrashekhara, performing Jalabhishek of a Shivalinga with milk and water, and offering white flowers while chanting Om Namah Shivaya creates the most direct weekly Chandra upay available.
- Chandra Beej Mantra japa. Om Shram Shreem Shroum Sah Chandraya Namah, chanted 108 times every Monday evening as the Moon rises, is the primary Chandra mantra for strengthening the Moon's energy and addressing Chandra-related marriage challenges.
- Purnima observance. The full Moon night is the most powerful time for Chandra puja. Sitting in a space where the full Moon is visible, offering white flowers and milk to the Moon, chanting the Chandra mantra and meditating on the Moon's complete and luminous form creates a monthly renewal of the Moon's strengthening energy.
- White foods on Mondays. Eating white foods, milk, white rice, yogurt, coconut, white sesame, on Mondays creates a dietary resonance with Chandra's energy.
- Pearl or Moonstone gemstone. Pearl is Chandra's gemstone. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a natural pearl in silver on the ring finger or little finger of the right hand significantly strengthens Chandra's energy in the kundali.
- Spending time near water. Regular time at rivers, lakes, the ocean or even a home fountain creates a direct resonance with Chandra's water-governing energy and has a genuine therapeutic and harmonising effect on the emotional world.
- Seva to the mother and to motherly figures. Since Chandra governs the mother, genuine acts of service and care directed toward one's own mother or to mother-like figures in one's community create the most direct karmic resonance with Chandra's highest qualities.
Mangal Upays for Marriage
When Mangal creates marriage challenges: Mangal creates marriage challenges primarily through Mangal Dosha in its various house placements, through Mangal's conjunction with Shukra creating an impulsive and conflict-prone romantic energy, and through Mangal's placement in the seventh house creating ego-driven competition within marriage.
The most effective Mangal upays for marriage:
- Tuesday fast and Hanuman puja. Tuesday is Mangal's day and Bhagwan Hanuman is the most important protective deity for Mangal-related challenges. Fasting on Tuesdays, visiting Bhagwan Hanuman temples and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa with sincere devotion is the single most widely practised and most consistently effective Mangal upay.
- Mangal Beej Mantra japa. Om Kram Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, chanted 108 times every Tuesday morning on a red coral mala, is the primary Mangal mantra for addressing all forms of Mangal-related marriage challenges.
- Red offerings on Tuesdays. Offering red flowers, red lentils (masoor dal), red cloth and sindoor at a Bhagwan Hanuman or Bhagwan Kartikeya temple every Tuesday, with sincere prayer for the constructive and marriage-supporting expression of Mangal's energy.
- Red coral (Moonga) gemstone. Red coral is Mangal's gemstone. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi for a specific kundali, wearing red coral in copper or gold on the ring finger of the right hand strengthens Mangal's energy and reduces its more aggressive and conflict-creating qualities in the marriage area.
- Physical exercise. Mangal governs physical energy, strength and action. Regular vigorous physical exercise creates a healthy channel for Mangal's fierce energy that prevents it from expressing through conflict and aggression in relationships. For those with challenging Mangal placements, regular exercise is a genuinely effective upay.
- Avoiding arguments on Tuesdays. Traditional Vedic wisdom advises that those with Mangal Dosha should make a conscious effort to avoid arguments and confrontations on Tuesdays, Mangal's own day, when his energy is most concentrated and most easily expressed through conflict.
Budha Upays for Marriage
When Budha creates marriage challenges: Budha creates marriage challenges through communication difficulties within the relationship, through indecision and the difficulty of committing clearly to a marriage decision and through Budha-related Chandal Dosha when Budha is conjunct Rahu. A weak or afflicted Budha can also create challenges with the discrimination needed for good marriage decisions.
The most effective Budha upays for marriage:
- Wednesday observance. Wednesday is Budha's day. Wearing green on Wednesdays, eating green vegetables and green gram (moong dal), donating green cloth and moong dal to those in need, and performing a brief Budha puja with green flowers and green cloth.
- Budha Beej Mantra japa. Om Bram Breem Broum Sah Budhaya Namah, chanted 108 times on Wednesdays, strengthens Budha's clarity, discrimination and communication qualities.
- Conscious communication practice. Since Budha governs communication, the most effective behavioral upay for Budha-related marriage challenges is the sincere and consistent practice of clear, kind and honest communication in all relationships, particularly in the context of the marriage search and in the marriage itself.
- Emerald (Panna) gemstone. Emerald is Budha's gemstone. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a natural emerald in gold or silver on the little finger of the right hand strengthens Budha's qualities of clarity, communication and discrimination.
- Study and learning. Budha governs learning and intellectual engagement. Regular study of any subject that genuinely interests the person, particularly study of dharmic texts or subjects that are practically relevant to understanding relationships, creates a sustained positive resonance with Budha's energy.
Guru Upays for Marriage
When Guru creates marriage challenges: As discussed extensively in the blog on Guru and marriage timing, Guru creates marriage challenges when weak, debilitated, retrograde or afflicted by Rahu (Guru Chandal Yoga). For women specifically, a weak Guru directly affects the timing and quality of marriage since Guru is the karak of the husband.
The most effective Guru upays for marriage:
- Thursday fast and Brihaspati puja. Thursday is Guru's day. Fasting on Thursdays with devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu and Brihaspati, wearing yellow, eating yellow foods including yellow lentils, banana and turmeric-containing dishes, and performing a brief puja with yellow flowers and chana dal.
- Guru Beej Mantra japa. Om Gram Greem Groum Sah Guruve Namah, chanted 108 times every Thursday morning on a turmeric mala or a yellow sapphire mala, is the primary Guru mantra for strengthening Guru's wisdom, auspiciousness and marriage-timing energy.
- Vishnu Sahasranama recitation. Regular recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama, particularly on Thursdays and Ekadashi days, invokes Bhagwan Vishnu's sustaining grace as the presiding deity of Guru grah. This is among the most powerful Guru upays available.
- Serving teachers, elders and the wise. Since Guru governs teachers and the principle of wisdom transmitted from one generation to the next, genuinely serving, respecting and supporting teachers, elders and those who carry wisdom creates the most direct karmic resonance with Guru's highest expression.
- Donation for education. Donating books, educational materials or financial support to educational causes resonates with Guru's role as the planet of learning and the transmission of knowledge.
- Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) gemstone. Yellow Sapphire is Guru's gemstone and one of the most powerful and most auspicious in the entire Jyotish gemstone system. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a genuine yellow sapphire in gold on the index finger of the right hand can significantly strengthen Guru's blessing in the kundali, with particularly powerful effects on marriage timing.
- Banana tree care. The banana tree is sacred to Guru and Bhagwan Vishnu. Watering a banana tree on Thursdays with sincere prayer is a traditional and accessible Guru upay.
Shukra Upays for Marriage
When Shukra creates marriage challenges: Shukra creates marriage challenges through debilitation, combustion, affliction by malefic planets and through weakness in the Navamsa chart. Since Shukra is the karak of marriage and love for all, any significant weakness in Shukra's expression is among the most directly marriage-relevant of all planetary challenges.
The most effective Shukra upays for marriage:
- Friday fast and Lakshmi puja. Friday is Shukra's day. Fasting on Fridays with devotion to Maa Lakshmi, wearing white or cream, offering white flowers to Maa Lakshmi with a ghee diya and camphor and chanting the Shri Suktam. These Friday observances are among the most universally recommended marriage upays in the entire Vedic tradition.
- Shukra Beej Mantra japa. Om Dram Dreem Droum Sah Shukraya Namah, chanted 108 times every Friday morning on a white crystal or clear quartz mala, is the primary Shukra mantra for strengthening the planet of love and marriage.
- Shri Suktam recitation. The Shri Suktam, the ancient Vedic hymn to Maa Lakshmi, is the most powerful Shukra-resonant scripture available. Its regular recitation, particularly on Fridays, creates a sustained field of Maa Lakshmi's grace that directly strengthens Shukra's capacity for love, beauty and marriage.
- White foods and beautiful domestic space. Since Shukra governs sensory pleasure, beauty and domestic harmony, consciously creating and maintaining a beautiful, harmonious and pleasantly sensory home environment is a form of Shukra upay. Beautiful flowers, pleasant fragrances, tasteful decoration and the regular preparation of nourishing and beautiful food are all Shukra-strengthening practices.
- Diamond or White Sapphire gemstone. Diamond is Shukra's primary gemstone and White Sapphire (Safed Pukhraj) is the accessible alternative. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a diamond or white sapphire in silver or white gold on the middle finger of the right hand significantly strengthens Shukra's energy in the kundali.
- Genuine acts of love and appreciation. The most fundamental Shukra upay is the conscious and consistent practice of expressing genuine love and genuine appreciation to those around you. Shukra strengthens through the genuine giving of love. Those who consciously and consistently practice expressing warmth, appreciation and genuine care toward others create a sustained strengthening of Shukra's energy in their own kundali.
Shani Upays for Marriage
When Shani creates marriage challenges: Shani creates marriage challenges through his placement in or aspect on the seventh house (Shani in the seventh house), through Sade Sati and Shani Mahadasha creating delay in marriage timing, through Vish Yoga when conjunct Chandra and through Daridra Yoga when afflicting the wealth houses.
The most effective Shani upays for marriage:
- Saturday fast and Shani puja. Saturday is Shani's day. Observing a Saturday fast, performing Tailabhishek (sesame oil abhishek) of a Shani idol or image, offering black sesame seeds and blue or black cloth at a Shani temple, lighting a sesame oil diya before Bhagwan Shani.
- Hanuman puja on Saturdays. As discussed in the blog on Shani in the seventh house, Bhagwan Hanuman is the most powerful protector against Shani's more challenging influences. Visiting a Hanuman temple on Saturdays, offering sindoor and sesame oil and chanting the Hanuman Chalisa with sincere devotion is the most widely recommended and most consistently effective Shani upay.
- Shani Beej Mantra japa. Om Pram Preem Proum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah, chanted 108 times every Saturday morning on a black sesame mala or iron bead mala, is the primary Shani mantra for addressing all Shani-related marriage challenges.
- Dasharatha Shani Stotra recitation. This ancient prayer composed by King Dasharatha to Bhagwan Shani, particularly during Sade Sati, is one of the most traditionally recommended and most consistently effective Shani upays for reducing the harshest effects of Shani's challenging periods.
- Genuine service to the poor and underprivileged. Since Shani governs the marginalized and the suffering, genuine and heartfelt service to those in difficult circumstances, the elderly, the poor, those with disabilities, creates the most direct karmic resonance with Shani's highest expression. This is the Shani upay that experienced Jyotishis most consistently recommend alongside the ritual practices.
- Feeding crows on Saturdays. Crows are Shani's vahana. Feeding them on Saturdays with rice or sesame-mixed food is one of the most traditional and most accessible Shani upays.
- Blue Sapphire (Neelam) gemstone. Blue Sapphire is Shani's gemstone and is considered the most powerful and most potentially dangerous gemstone in Jyotish. It must never be worn without explicit, specific recommendation from a very experienced Jyotishi who has thoroughly assessed the entire kundali. When it is the right gemstone for a specific kundali, it creates remarkable results. When it is the wrong gemstone, it creates the opposite.
Rahu Upays for Marriage
When Rahu creates marriage challenges: Rahu creates marriage challenges through his placement in or aspect on the seventh house, through Guru Chandal Yoga and Chandal Dosha when conjunct Guru, through Grahan Yoga when conjunct Surya or Chandra, through Kaal Sarp Dosha when all planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, and through the Rahu Ketu transit creating sudden reversals in the marriage path.
The most effective Rahu upays for marriage:
- Saturday observance for Rahu. Saturday is shared between Shani and Rahu in most Jyotish traditions. Specific Rahu upays on Saturdays include offering durva grass, coconut and blue cloth at a Durga temple, and feeding ants on Saturday mornings.
- Rahu Beej Mantra japa. Om Bhram Bhreem Bhroum Sah Rahave Namah, chanted 108 times on Saturdays, is the primary Rahu mantra for pacifying his disruptive and illusory influence on the marriage path.
- Durga Puja and Durgasaptashati recitation. As discussed throughout this series, Maa Durga is the most powerful protective force against Rahu's illusory and disruptive energy. Regular Durga Puja, particularly during both Navratri periods, and regular recitation of the Durgasaptashati are among the most effective Rahu upays available.
- Avoiding Rahu Kaal. Every day has a specific Rahu Kaal, the hour-long period governed by Rahu. This period is traditionally avoided for initiating auspicious activities including marriage-related meetings and decisions. Observing the Rahu Kaal and avoiding significant marriage-related actions during this period is a practical and accessible Rahu upay.
- Donation of Rahu-associated items. Donating dark blue cloth, sesame seeds, coconut and iron items on Saturdays resonates with Rahu's energy and is a traditional upay for his pacification.
- Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) gemstone. Gomed is Rahu's gemstone. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a natural hessonite garnet in gold or panchdhatu on the middle finger of the right hand can significantly pacify Rahu's more disruptive influences and redirect his energy toward the karmic learning and spiritual growth that represent his highest expression.
- Developing discernment as a conscious practice. The most fundamental Rahu upay is the development of genuine discernment, the ability to distinguish between Rahu's glamour and genuine dharmic reality in all situations including romantic relationships. As discussed in the blog on Guru Chandal Yoga, this is the inner work that Rahu most specifically invites.
Ketu Upays for Marriage
When Ketu creates marriage challenges: Ketu creates marriage challenges through his placement in the seventh house creating emotional detachment and disinterest in conventional marriage, through Grahan Yoga when conjunct Surya or Chandra, through Kaal Sarp Dosha when all planets are hemmed between Ketu and Rahu, and through his transit creating periods of emotional withdrawal from marriage-seeking.
The most effective Ketu upays for marriage:
- Tuesday and Saturday observance for Ketu. Ketu is traditionally associated with both Tuesday and Saturday in different Jyotish traditions. Offering multicolored cloth, grey items, sesame seeds and horse gram (kulthi) at temples, and performing Ganesh Puja with sincere intention for clarity and direction in the marriage path.
- Ketu Beej Mantra japa. Om Shram Shreem Shroum Sah Ketave Namah, chanted 108 times on Tuesdays or Saturdays, is the primary Ketu mantra for addressing the detachment and dissolution qualities that Ketu creates in the marriage area.
- Ganesh Puja. As discussed in the blog on Ketu in the seventh house, Bhagwan Ganesha is the deity most closely associated with Ketu in many Jyotish traditions. Regular Ganesh Puja with sincere intention for clarity of direction in the marriage path is one of the most effective and most accessible Ketu upays.
- Seva and selfless service. Ketu responds most deeply to genuine, selfless service performed without any expectation of reward. This is not coincidental. Ketu's energy is one of dissolution, of the letting go of ego-driven desire. Genuine seva, service that dissolves the ego's demands and opens the heart to genuine giving, is the most direct expression of Ketu's highest energy and the most effective single Ketu upay.
- Meditation and inner spiritual practice. Ketu governs spiritual seeking, past life wisdom and the development of inner completeness. A consistent meditation practice directly honors Ketu's energy and creates the inner wholeness that Ketu in the seventh house specifically calls for as the prerequisite for genuine partnership.
- Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) gemstone. Cat's Eye is Ketu's gemstone. When recommended by a learned Jyotishi, wearing a natural cat's eye in gold or panchdhatu on the middle finger of the right hand can balance Ketu's more detaching and dissolving influences. As with all Ketu and Rahu gemstones, this must only be worn with explicit learned guidance.
- Regular Nag Panchami observance. As discussed in the blog on Kaal Sarp Dosha, offering milk to Nag Devatas on Nag Panchami and on every Panchami tithi is a traditional upay specifically for the serpent energy that both Rahu and Ketu govern.
The Upay Calendar - Integrating All Nine Planets into a Weekly Practice
One of the most practically powerful ways to maintain a comprehensive planetary upay practice is to organise the week around the planetary days, creating a daily upay practice that rotates through all nine planets across the seven days of the week.
- Sunday - Surya upay day. Surya Namaskar at sunrise. Surya Arghya. Wearing red or orange. Donating wheat and copper. Spending time in morning sunlight.
- Monday - Chandra upay day. Monday fast if maintained. Jalabhishek of a Shivalinga with milk. White flower offering to Maa Parvati or Maa Lakshmi. Chandra Beej Mantra japa in the evening. Meditation on the Moon.
- Tuesday - Mangal and Ketu upay day. Hanuman Chalisa recitation. Offering at a Hanuman temple. Mangal Beej Mantra japa in the morning. Ketu Beej Mantra japa in the evening. Donating red items for Mangal and grey or multicolored items for Ketu.
- Wednesday - Budha upay day. Wearing green. Budha Beej Mantra japa. Eating green gram. Donating green cloth. Conscious communication practice.
- Thursday - Guru upay day. Thursday fast if maintained. Vishnu Sahasranama recitation. Guru Beej Mantra japa. Offering yellow flowers to Bhagwan Vishnu or Brihaspati. Watering the banana tree. Donating yellow items.
- Friday - Shukra upay day. Friday fast if maintained. Shri Suktam recitation before Maa Lakshmi. White flower offering with ghee diya. Shukra Beej Mantra japa. Eating white sattvic foods. Expressing genuine love and appreciation to those around you.
- Saturday - Shani and Rahu upay day. Hanuman puja. Shani Tailabhishek. Shani Beej Mantra japa. Rahu Beej Mantra japa. Feeding crows. Feeding ants. Genuine service to the poor or elderly. Donating black sesame and blue cloth for Shani. Donating blue and durva grass for Rahu.
This weekly cycle, maintained with genuine consistency and sincere intention, creates a comprehensive and sustained planetary harmonisation practice that addresses all nine planets in their specific marriage-related qualities and challenges.
The Three Levels of Upay - Understanding What Fits Your Situation
In the Jyotish tradition, upays exist at three distinct levels of intensity and power. Understanding which level is appropriate for your specific situation helps in selecting the most appropriate practice.
- Level One: Daily individual practices. The mantra japa, the specific foods and colors for each planetary day, the small offerings and the individual behavioral practices. These are the most accessible, the most self-directed and the most suitable for maintaining as a continuous baseline practice throughout the marriage search period.
- Level Two: Weekly and monthly ritual practices. The specific fasts, the temple visits, the puja practices associated with each planet's day and the monthly observances like Purnima and Amavasya. These require more commitment than the daily practices but are still accessible for most people.
- Level Three: Major puja and havan. The formal pujas and havans discussed throughout this blog series, performed by learned pandits with complete vidhi, the Navgrah Shanti Puja, the specific dosha Nivaran pujas, the Rudrabhishek, the Maha Mrityunjaya Havan, the Swayamvar Parvati Puja and the Katyayani Puja. These are the most powerful interventions and are specifically recommended when the marriage challenge is significant or when the daily and weekly practices have not produced the desired movement.
The most effective approach for those with significant marriage challenges is to maintain Level One practices daily, Level Two practices weekly and monthly, and to commission Level Three pujas at the appropriate times as identified by a learned Jyotishi.
Common Upay Mistakes to Avoid
Over many years of Jyotish practice, certain common upay mistakes appear repeatedly. Understanding these helps in avoiding them.
- Wearing gemstones without proper Jyotish guidance. This is perhaps the most common and most potentially harmful upay mistake. Gemstones are among the most powerful Jyotish interventions available and their effects, when the wrong gemstone is worn, can be significantly harmful. Especially for Rahu (Gomed), Ketu (Cat's Eye) and Shani (Blue Sapphire), never wear the gemstone without explicit, specific, experienced Jyotish guidance.
- Performing upays for a planet that is actually well-placed. If a planet is strong and well-placed in your kundali, performing upays for it is unnecessary and may actually disturb its positive expression. Upays should always be directed at the specifically challenged planets identified through proper kundali assessment.
- Expecting immediate results. Karmic patterns do not resolve overnight. Most planetary upays work gradually over weeks, months and sometimes years. The expectation of immediate results creates disappointment that can lead to abandoning practices before they have had time to create their effect.
- Performing upays mechanically without intention. As noted in the opening principles, intention is as important as action in the upay system. Mantras chanted mindlessly, fasts observed without devotional awareness and donations made without genuine care for those receiving them are significantly less effective than the same actions performed with genuine intention and genuine devotion.
- Using upays as a substitute for practical effort. Upays create the spiritual conditions that support practical action. They do not replace practical action. The most powerful upay combined with no practical effort in the marriage search produces far less result than the combination of both.
