Nadi Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, and the Kundali Doshas Nobody Explains Clearly - A Complete and Honest Guide
You were hopeful about this one.
The family had met. The conversations had gone well. There was a genuine warmth between everyone involved. And then the kundalis were sent for matching - and the answer that came back was not what anyone wanted to hear.
Nadi dosha. Or Bhakoot dosha. Or a Guna score of fourteen out of thirty six. Or Manglik on one side and not the other.
And suddenly everything stopped.
What followed was probably a frustrating combination of vague explanations, conflicting opinions from different pandits, well-meaning relatives saying completely opposite things, and online calculators giving results that made no sense at all.
If this has been your experience - or if you are trying to understand what these doshas actually mean before the kundali matching conversation even happens - this blog is going to give you what you have been looking for.
A clear, complete, honest explanation. Without unnecessary fear. Without false reassurance. Just the actual truth about what these doshas are, what they mean for your marriage, and what you can genuinely do about them.
Why Kundali Doshas Are So Misunderstood
Before going into each dosha individually, it is worth understanding why there is so much confusion around this subject.
Vedic Jyotish is an extraordinarily sophisticated system. The science of kundali matching alone - what is formally called Ashtakoot Milan - involves eight separate categories of compatibility assessment, each with its own rules, exceptions, cancellation conditions and interpretive nuances. Understanding it properly requires years of dedicated study under a learned guru.
What has happened in modern times is that this sophisticated system has been reduced to a simple scoring tool - available on any website, producing a number between zero and thirty six in seconds, with no context, no exceptions, no cancellation conditions and no human wisdom applied.
The result is that families make life-altering decisions based on a number produced by an algorithm that has no understanding of the actual charts, the actual people, or the actual context.
This is not a criticism of Jyotish. It is a criticism of how Jyotish is being applied - and it is causing enormous unnecessary harm to people whose marriage prospects are being dismissed on the basis of an incomplete and mechanical reading of a nuanced system.
With that context established, let us go through the major doshas clearly and honestly.
The Ashtakoot System - Understanding the Eight Kootas
The Ashtakoot Milan system assesses compatibility across eight categories. Each category has a specific number of points. The total is thirty six points. Here is what each koota actually measures:
Varna - 1 point. This koota assesses the spiritual compatibility and the natural ego levels between two people. It is the lowest scoring koota and in practice is rarely a dealbreaker on its own.
Vashya - 2 points. This koota looks at the natural dominance, attraction and influence between the two partners. It reflects who naturally leads in the relationship and whether that dynamic is harmonious.
Tara - 3 points. Also called Dina koota, this assesses the birth star compatibility between the two individuals and is associated with overall health, wellbeing and the general fortune of the couple.
Yoni - 4 points. This koota assesses physical and sexual compatibility between partners. It is based on the animal symbol associated with each nakshatra.
Graha Maitri - 5 points. This is the mental and intellectual compatibility koota. It looks at the relationship between the moon sign lords of both individuals and reflects how naturally their minds and emotional natures align.
Gana - 6 points. This koota assesses temperament compatibility. Each nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas - Deva (gentle and divine in temperament), Manava (human and balanced) or Rakshasa (intense and fierce). Ideal matches pair the same gana with the same gana.
Bhakoot - 7 points. This is the second highest scoring koota and one of the most discussed. It assesses emotional, financial and overall relationship compatibility based on the position of the two moon signs relative to each other.
Nadi - 8 points. This is the highest scoring koota and the one considered most important. It assesses health compatibility, genetic harmony and the overall flow of vital energy between the two partners.
Now let us go deep into the doshas that cause the most fear and confusion.
Nadi Dosha - The Most Serious Koota, Explained Properly
Nadi dosha occurs when both the bride and the groom belong to the same Nadi. There are three Nadis - Adi (also called Vata), Madhya (also called Pitta) and Antya (also called Kapha). These correspond to the three fundamental energies in Ayurvedic understanding of the human body.
Each of the twenty seven nakshatras belongs to one of the three Nadis. When both partners are born under nakshatras that belong to the same Nadi, Nadi dosha is said to be present.
Why is Nadi dosha considered so serious?
Because Nadi carries eight points - the maximum in the Ashtakoot system. When Nadi dosha is present, those eight points are scored as zero, which can dramatically reduce the overall compatibility score. But beyond the scoring, the traditional concern with Nadi dosha is about health and progeny. When two people of the same Nadi marry, the concern is that there may be health challenges, difficulties in conceiving children, or in severe cases, threats to the life or wellbeing of one partner.
When is Nadi dosha cancelled?
This is the part that most online calculators do not tell you - and it is critically important.
Nadi dosha is considered cancelled or significantly reduced in several specific situations:
When both partners have the same rashi (moon sign) but different nakshatras, Nadi dosha is generally considered cancelled. When both partners have the same nakshatra but different padas (the four quarters of each nakshatra), many Jyotish traditions consider the dosha cancelled. When both partners have the same nakshatra and the same pada but different rashis, some traditions consider the dosha reduced. When the Nadi dosha is present but the overall Guna score is very high - above twenty eight or thirty - and other compatibility factors are strong, many experienced Jyotishis consider the dosha manageable.
What should you do if Nadi dosha is present?
First, get the kundalis assessed by an experienced and learned Jyotishi - not just an online tool. The cancellation conditions need to be checked carefully and in the context of the full charts of both individuals.
Second, if Nadi dosha is confirmed after a proper assessment, specific remedies are available. Nadi dosha Nivaran Puja - performed to Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Parvati - is the most traditional and effective remedy. The symbolism is profound. Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Parvati themselves are considered to embody the union of Shiva and Shakti - two cosmic forces that are fundamentally different in their Nadi yet unite to sustain all of creation. Their marriage is the ultimate example of Nadi dosha transcended by divine grace.
Bhakoot Dosha - The Second Most Feared, Properly Explained
Bhakoot dosha occurs when the moon signs of the bride and groom are in certain unfavorable positions relative to each other. Specifically, Bhakoot dosha is present when the two moon signs form a 6-8, 9-5 or 12-2 relationship with each other.
The 6-8 Bhakoot is the one most associated with health concerns and enmity between the couple over time.
The 9-5 Bhakoot is associated with challenges related to children and progeny.
The 12-2 Bhakoot is associated with financial losses and economic strain in the marriage.
Bhakoot carries seven points in the Ashtakoot system - the second highest. When Bhakoot dosha is present, those seven points score as zero, which again significantly reduces the overall compatibility score.
When is Bhakoot dosha cancelled?
Like Nadi dosha, Bhakoot dosha has important cancellation conditions that most online tools completely ignore.
Bhakoot dosha is considered cancelled when both partners have the same rashi lord - meaning their moon signs are ruled by the same planet. For example, if one person has Taurus moon and the other has Libra moon, both are ruled by Shukra - and Bhakoot dosha between them is generally considered cancelled. Bhakoot dosha is also considered cancelled when both partners have the same nakshatra lord - meaning their birth nakshatras are ruled by the same planet.
Additionally, if the Navamsa charts of both individuals show a strong and well-placed seventh house and a strong Shukra, many experienced Jyotishis consider Bhakoot dosha to be significantly mitigated.
What should you do if Bhakoot dosha is present?
Again, a proper assessment by a learned Jyotishi is essential before any conclusion is drawn. Cancellation conditions need to be checked. The full kundali context needs to be considered.
If Bhakoot dosha is confirmed, remedies include Bhakoot Dosha Nivaran Puja, Shukra Grah Shanti Puja - since Shukra governs relationship harmony - and Navgrah Shanti Puja for overall graha balance.
Gana Dosha - When Temperaments Clash
Gana dosha occurs when the ganas of the two partners are considered incompatible. The most serious Gana mismatch is Rakshasa-Deva - when one partner belongs to the Rakshasa gana and the other to the Deva gana.
What does this actually mean in practice?
A person of Deva gana tends to be gentle, spiritually inclined, emotionally sensitive and harmonious in nature. A person of Rakshasa gana tends to be intense, ambitious, strong-willed and sometimes aggressive. When these two temperaments are paired, the concern is that the differences in fundamental nature will create persistent friction and incompatibility in the marriage.
How serious is Gana dosha really?
Of all the major doshas, Gana dosha is generally considered the least independently serious. Most experienced Jyotishis will not reject a match purely on the basis of Gana dosha if the other kootas are scoring well and the overall charts are compatible. Gana dosha becomes more significant when it is combined with other doshas - particularly Bhakoot or Nadi dosha.
Cancellation conditions for Gana dosha:
When both partners have the same moon sign, Gana dosha is generally cancelled. When Graha Maitri is strong and the overall Guna score is above twenty five, Gana dosha is often considered manageable.
Manglik Dosha in the Context of Kundali Matching
While Manglik dosha was covered extensively in a previous blog, it is important to address it in the context of kundali matching as well - because it is the most common reason that a good match gets rejected at the kundali matching stage.
The key point to remember is this. Manglik dosha is not part of the Ashtakoot system. It is assessed separately, from the individual kundali rather than from the comparison between two kundalis. But it is considered alongside the Ashtakoot score when an overall assessment of compatibility is made.
Many families treat a Manglik-non Manglik mismatch as an automatic disqualification. This is not supported by the full nuance of Jyotish. As explained in our earlier blog, Manglik dosha has many cancellation conditions and its severity varies enormously from kundali to kundali. It should be assessed by a learned Jyotishi in full context - never by a blanket rule.
The Navamsa Chart - The Deeper Picture of Marriage
One of the most important tools in Jyotish for understanding marriage is the Navamsa chart - the ninth divisional chart, also called the D9 chart. The Navamsa is considered the most important divisional chart in a kundali and it specifically governs the deeper patterns of marriage and partnership in a person's life.
An experienced Jyotishi will always look at the Navamsa chart alongside the Rashi chart when assessing marriage compatibility. The Navamsa can reveal:
Whether the challenges shown in the Rashi chart are deeply embedded or more surface level. Whether the person's overall dharma and spiritual path supports a fulfilling marriage. The quality and nature of the partnership that is karmically destined for the person. Whether remedies are likely to be effective and what form they should take.
A low Ashtakoot score combined with a strong and harmonious Navamsa chart for both individuals is a much better picture than a high Ashtakoot score combined with challenged Navamsa charts. This is why a complete Jyotish assessment - not just an Ashtakoot calculator - is so important.
What the Parashara Hora Shastra Says About Doshas and Remedies
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - the foundational text of Vedic Jyotish written by the great sage Parashara - is explicit on the subject of doshas and their remediability.
Sage Parashara teaches that graha doshas are the result of karma accumulated across lifetimes. They are not arbitrary punishments. They are karmic patterns that the soul has agreed to work through in this lifetime. And crucially, he also teaches that karma is not fixed and unchangeable. Sincere puja, mantra, dana (charitable giving) and bhakti (devotion) can all influence karmic patterns and reduce the effects of doshas.
This teaching is the foundation of the entire system of Jyotish remedies. It tells us that doshas are real - but so is the power of sincere spiritual effort to address them.
Pujas That Address Kundali Doshas in Marriage
For people dealing with Nadi dosha, Bhakoot dosha, Gana dosha or a generally low Ashtakoot score, the following pujas are the most relevant and effective when performed with proper Vedic vidhi:
- Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja is performed specifically to address and reduce the effects of Nadi dosha. It involves worship of Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Parvati and includes specific mantras, abhishek and havan. This puja is ideally performed on a Monday - the day of Bhagwan Shiva.
- Bhakoot Dosha Nivaran Puja addresses the specific challenges of Bhakoot dosha and seeks the blessings of Bhagwan Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi for relationship harmony, financial stability and health within the marriage.
- Mangal Dosha Nivaran Puja as discussed in previous blogs is the primary remedy for Manglik dosha concerns in kundali matching.
- Shukra Grah Shanti Puja strengthens Venus in both kundalis and directly improves the conditions for compatibility, attraction and harmony in the relationship.
- Navgrah Shanti Puja is the most comprehensive remedy when multiple doshas are present. By propitiating all nine grahas together, it creates an overall environment of graha balance and harmony that supports the marriage moving forward.
- Maha Mrityunjaya Havan is particularly recommended when Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha is raising specific concerns about health and longevity in the marriage. This powerful havan invokes Bhagwan Shiva as the conqueror of all obstacles including health-related challenges.
Practical Guidance - What to Do If You Have Been Told There Is a Dosha
If a pandit or an online tool has told you there is a dosha in your kundali matching, here is a clear and grounded set of steps:
- Do not panic and do not make any final decision immediately. A dosha identified by an online calculator is not a verdict. It is a starting point for a proper assessment.
- Get the kundalis assessed by an experienced and learned Jyotishi - preferably one who has studied under a guru and has decades of practical experience. Ask them specifically about cancellation conditions for any dosha that has been identified.
- Ask for the Navamsa charts to be assessed alongside the Rashi charts. If a Jyotishi is only looking at the Ashtakoot score and not the full chart picture including Navamsa, their assessment is incomplete.
- Ask about specific remedies. A learned Jyotishi will not just identify doshas. They will suggest specific remedies - pujas, mantras, fasting, charitable giving - that are appropriate for the specific doshas present.
- Perform the recommended pujas with sincerity and proper vidhi. The effectiveness of a puja depends enormously on the sincerity of intention and the correctness of the procedure. A puja performed by an experienced pandit with complete vidhi is far more effective than a hurried or incomplete one.
- Give the remedies time to work. Karmic patterns do not shift overnight. Consistent spiritual effort over a period of time - combined with practical steps in the relationship - creates the conditions for genuine positive change.

A Final Thought
The great sage Parashara taught his son Maitreya - and through him, all of us - that the stars and planets are not our masters. They are indicators. They show us the karmic landscape we are working within. But they do not determine our destiny absolutely.
Bhagwan's grace, sincere effort and the right karma can shift what the planets indicate. This is not wishful thinking. It is the explicit teaching of the very tradition that gave us Jyotish in the first place.
Your kundali is not your sentence. It is your starting point.
And with the right knowledge, the right guidance and the right spiritual effort - every starting point can lead to a beautiful destination.
