Your Kundali Said Yes, But the Match Still Fell Apart - The Truth About Kundali Mismatch and Manglik Dosha
Everything was going well.
You had met the person. There was a good feeling. The families had spoken, and the initial conversations were positive. Everyone was quietly hopeful. And then someone said - "Let us get the kundalis checked first."
A few days later, the news came back. The kundali score was not enough. Or there was a Manglik dosha. Or the pandit found a Nadi dosha. Or the Bhakoot was not matching.
And just like that, something that felt right was declared wrong - by a chart.
If this has happened to you once, it is painful. If it has happened more than once, it starts to feel like the universe itself is working against you. You begin to wonder - will any kundali ever match? Is there something fundamentally wrong with my horoscope? Am I destined to stay unmarried?
These are real fears. And they deserve real answers - not vague reassurances and not blind panic either.
This blog is going to give you the clearest, most honest explanation of what kundali matching actually means, what Manglik dosha really is, which doshas are genuinely serious and which ones are often overstated - and most importantly, what you can do about it.
What Is Kundali Matching and Why Does It Matter?
In Vedic Jyotish, kundali matching - also called Ashtakoot Milan or Guna Milan - is a system of comparing two horoscopes to assess compatibility for marriage. The word Ashtakoot means eight categories, and each category examines a different dimension of compatibility between two people.
The eight kootas are:
- Varna - spiritual compatibility and ego levels between partners
- Vashya - the natural dominance and attraction between the couple
- Tara - the birth star compatibility and health-related harmony
- Yoni - physical and sexual compatibility
- Graha Maitri - mental compatibility and emotional friendship between partners
- Gana - the temperament match - whether both are Deva (divine), Manava (human) or Rakshasa (fierce) in nature
- Bhakoot - emotional and financial compatibility and the overall health of the relationship
- Nadi - genetic and health compatibility, the most important of all eight
Each koota has a specific number of points assigned to it. The total possible score is 36 points. A score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable for marriage. A score of 24 or above is considered good. A score of 32 or above is considered excellent.
Now here is the important thing that most people are not told clearly.
Kundali matching is a tool, not a verdict.
It gives guidance. It highlights areas of potential strength and friction between two people. But it is not an absolute yes or no answer about whether a marriage will succeed or fail. Many couples with low scores have had deeply fulfilling marriages. Many couples with high scores have ended up unhappy. The kundali is one input - an important one - but it works alongside karmic readiness, personal effort, and Bhagwan's grace.
The Doshas That Cause the Most Fear - And What They Actually Mean
Within kundali matching, certain doshas cause a disproportionate amount of fear. Let us go through each one clearly.
Manglik Dosha - The Most Feared, The Most Misunderstood
Manglik dosha - also called Kuja dosha - is present when Mangal (Mars) is placed in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth house of a person's kundali.
Some Jyotish traditions also include the second house, making it six houses in total. This variation means that depending on which system the pandit follows, more or fewer people are declared Manglik.
Because of this, it is estimated that anywhere between 40 to 50 percent of all people have some form of Mangal dosha. Think about that for a moment. If nearly half the population is Manglik, it cannot possibly mean that half the population is unable to marry successfully.
What Manglik dosha actually does:
Mangal is a fiery, aggressive grah. When placed in houses that govern marriage and partnerships, it can bring intensity, conflict, dominance, and friction into relationships. The person may be strong-willed, short-tempered, or find it difficult to compromise. In some severe cases, a Manglik person being matched with a non-Manglik can create long-term friction and disharmony.
What Manglik dosha does NOT automatically mean:
It does not mean the person is cursed. It does not mean every marriage they enter will fail or end in tragedy. It does not mean they cannot marry a non-Manglik person under any circumstances. And it absolutely does not mean they should resign themselves to being alone.
When does Manglik dosha cancel or reduce?
There are several conditions under which Mangal dosha is considered to cancel or significantly reduce in severity:
When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered to balance out. When Mangal is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or in exaltation (Capricorn), its negative effects are reduced. When Mangal is with or aspected by a benefic grah like Guru (Jupiter), the dosha softens. After the age of 28, Mangal is said to naturally mature and its harsh effects begin to reduce.
An experienced Jyotishi can assess all these factors together and give a far more nuanced picture than a simple "Manglik - do not proceed."
Nadi Dosha - The One That Should Be Taken Seriously
Of all the eight kootas, Nadi carries the highest number of points - eight out of thirty six. And Nadi dosha is the one that genuinely deserves careful attention.
Nadi dosha occurs when both the bride and groom have the same Nadi - Adi, Madhya, or Antya. In Vedic thought, Nadi is connected to the flow of prana (life energy) in the body and is closely linked to genetics and health.
When two people with the same Nadi marry, it is said to create a risk of health challenges, difficulties in conceiving children, or a pattern of loss and separation in the marriage.
However, even Nadi dosha has exceptions. If both partners belong to the same rashi (moon sign) but different nakshatras, the dosha may be reduced. If both have the same nakshatra but different padas (quarters), some Jyotishis consider the dosha cancelled.
Nadi dosha should not be ignored - but it should also be assessed in full context by a knowledgeable Jyotishi, not just noted in isolation and used to reject a proposal.
Bhakoot Dosha
Bhakoot dosha is the second highest scoring koota, carrying seven points. It occurs when the moon signs of the two partners are in certain unfavorable positions relative to each other - specifically the 6-8, 9-5, or 12-2 relationship between the two rashis.
Bhakoot dosha is believed to create financial stress, emotional incompatibility, and in some cases health concerns within the marriage.
Like all doshas, Bhakoot dosha also has cancellation conditions. If both partners have the same Rashi lord or the same nakshatra lord, the dosha is often considered cancelled.
Gana Dosha
Gana refers to the temperament of a person based on their birth nakshatra. There are three ganas - Deva (gentle, spiritual), Manava (balanced, human), and Rakshasa (intense, fierce).
The general rule is that Deva-Deva, Manava-Manava, and Rakshasa-Rakshasa matches are ideal. Deva-Manava is acceptable. Rakshasa-Deva is considered a mismatch.
However, Gana dosha alone is rarely a dealbreaker. When other kootas score well and there is strong Graha Maitri, Gana dosha is often overlooked by experienced Jyotishis.
The Bigger Problem - How Kundali Matching Is Often Misused
Here is something that needs to be said clearly.
Kundali matching is a deeply sophisticated system that takes years of study to understand properly. When it is applied mechanically - by someone with limited knowledge or by an online calculator that spits out a number - it does more harm than good.
Families have rejected genuinely compatible partners because an online tool gave a score of 17 instead of 18. Proposals have been broken over a Manglik dosha that a proper Jyotishi would have declared cancelled or manageable. Real, human connections have been dismissed because someone followed a rigid interpretation of an ancient and nuanced system.
This does not mean kundali matching should be ignored. It means it should be done properly - by an experienced, learned Jyotishi who looks at the full chart of both individuals, assesses all the doshas in context, checks cancellation conditions, and gives a complete and balanced view.
A number between 18 and 36 is not the full story. It never was.
What the Shastras Say About Doshas and Remedies
The Parashara Hora Shastra - one of the most foundational texts of Vedic Jyotish - is very clear that doshas are not permanent, unalterable sentences. They are karmic imprints that can be addressed, reduced, and in many cases effectively neutralized through the right karma, puja, and divine grace.
The Skanda Purana and several Dharma Shastras speak about the power of upay (remedy) - that when a person performs the right puja with sincere intention and proper procedure, the malefic effects of graha doshas can be significantly reduced.
Bhagwan Shiva himself is called Mangaleshwar - the one who transforms what is inauspicious into auspicious. This is not a metaphor. It is a direct teaching that even the harshest graha conditions can be brought under divine grace through sincere sadhana.
Pujas That Help With Kundali Dosha and Manglik Dosha
For people dealing with Manglik dosha, Nadi dosha, Bhakoot dosha or a low kundali score, several Vedic pujas have proven deeply effective when done with proper vidhi:
- Mangal Dosha Nivaran Puja is the most direct remedy for Manglik dosha. This puja is performed to pacify Mangal grah and reduce its intensity in the area of relationships and marriage. It is ideally performed on a Tuesday, which is the day of Mangal.
- Kuja Dosha Shanti Puja is a more elaborate and comprehensive version of the Mangal remedy, involving specific havan, mantra japa, and offerings to Bhagwan Kartikeya - who is the presiding deity of Mangal grah.
- Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja specifically addresses the challenges created by Nadi dosha. It includes the worship of Bhagwan Shiva and Maa Parvati, as their union - despite all cosmic obstacles - is considered the highest example of dosha being transcended by divine will.
- Navgrah Shanti Puja is the ideal remedy when multiple doshas are present in a kundali. By propitiating all nine grahas together, this puja creates a more balanced and harmonious graha environment for vivah to take place.
- Maha Mrityunjaya Havan is recommended in cases where Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha is raising concerns about health and longevity in the marriage. This powerful havan calls on Bhagwan Shiva in his role as the conqueror of obstacles and illness.
Practical Steps You Can Take Right Now
While a proper puja is the most effective remedy, there are daily practices that can help shift the energy around these doshas:
Chant the Mangal Beej Mantra - "Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" 108 times every Tuesday. This mantra directly addresses and pacifies Mangal grah.
Offer red flowers and masoor dal (red lentils) at a Bhagwan Hanuman temple every Tuesday. Bhagwan Hanuman is considered an effective remedy for Mangal dosha as both are associated with Mars energy.
Donate red colored items - red cloth, red lentils, or copper - on Tuesdays. This is a traditional upay for reducing the intensity of Mangal dosha.
For Nadi dosha, offering water and white sesame seeds to Bhagwan Shiva on Mondays is a traditional and effective practice.
Get a proper kundali reading from a learned Jyotishi - not an online calculator. Understand your chart in full before concluding anything about your marriage prospects.
A Note for NRIs and Urban Professionals
If you are living abroad or in a metro city, the experience of kundali matching often comes with an additional layer of confusion. You may not fully believe in it yourself, but your parents do. Or you believe in it, but finding a trustworthy Jyotishi feels impossible.
Here is a grounded way to think about it.
Kundali matching is not superstition. It is a system built on centuries of observation about human compatibility - planetary energies affecting temperament, health, and emotional nature. You do not have to abandon rational thinking to engage with it. You just need to engage with it intelligently - through a learned guide, not a website that gives you a score in ten seconds.
And if there is a dosha - real or perceived - the answer is not to panic. The answer is to understand it clearly and address it properly.

Closing Thought
Maa Parvati and Bhagwan Shiva's union was considered impossible by every measure. Different ganas, different worlds, different temperaments. And yet it happened - because their devotion and karmic bond was stronger than any dosha or mismatch.
Your kundali is not your destiny. It is a map of your karmic starting point. And maps can be navigated with the right knowledge and the right grace.
Do not let a number or a dosha write the final word on your love story.
