Who are Rahu and Ketu in Vedic Astrology?

THE STORY OF RAHU AND KETU (Mythological Background)

The Origin of Rahu and Ketu – Samudra Manthan

The origin of Rahu and Ketu is described in detail in the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata, rooted in the story of the Samudra Manthan – the great churning of the cosmic ocean.

When the Devas and Asuras jointly churned the ocean to obtain Amrita (the nectar of immortality), Bhagwan Vishnu took the form of Mohini – a divine enchantress – to ensure the nectar reached only the Devas. An Asura named Svarbhanu, recognizing the deception, disguised himself as a Deva and seated himself among them. He quietly received and tasted a drop of Amrita.

Surya Bhagwan (the Sun) and Chandra Bhagwan (the Moon) recognized Svarbhanu and alerted Bhagwan Vishnu immediately. Vishnu swiftly severed Svarbhanu's head with his Sudarshana Chakra. However, because Svarbhanu had already consumed a drop of Amrita, he became immortal and could not be destroyed. His severed head became Rahu and his body became Ketu.

Placed among the Navagrahas by cosmic order, Rahu and Ketu carry an eternal enmity with Surya and Chandra – and it is this enmity that is believed to cause solar and lunar eclipses (Surya Grahan and Chandra Grahan) when Rahu or Ketu align with the Sun or Moon.
