Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

The Legend of Nag Panchami: A Tale of Faith and Forgiveness

Long ago, in a quiet village nestled near a dense forest, lived a humble farmer and his family. The farmer had two sons, a daughter-in-law, and a young daughter. The family worked hard, toiling in the fields and living in harmony with nature.

The Fatal Mistake

One hot summer afternoon, the younger son was clearing the field when he saw a young snake emerging from its hole. Afraid that it might harm someone, he killed it with a stick. Unbeknownst to him, this snake was the child of a powerful Naga (serpent deity) who resided deep within the forest.

That night, when the snake mother learned of her child’s death, she was enraged. Blinded by sorrow and vengeance, she slithered into the farmer's house and bit the young man and his brother, killing them both in their sleep. The next night, she came again and took the lives of the farmer and his wife.

The Devoted Daughter-in-Law

The only survivor was the young daughter-in-law, who had gone to her maternal home for a ritual and returned to find her family dead. Grief-stricken, she wept bitterly but soon learned from the villagers what had happened.

Rather than seeking revenge, she decided to appease the serpent goddess. With deep devotion, she prepared an altar, made offerings of milk, turmeric, and flowers, and began to fast and pray to the Naga Devi (Serpent Goddess) on the fifth day of the Shravan month.

Moved by her pure heart, selfless prayers, and deep sorrow, the serpent goddess appeared before her. “Why do you worship me when I have taken everything from you?” the goddess asked.

The daughter-in-law replied, “You acted in grief, and I do not blame you. I only ask for your forgiveness and the return of my family.”

Divine Blessing

The goddess, overwhelmed by the young woman’s compassion and humility, reversed the curse. She restored the lives of the entire family. The snake mother blessed the girl, saying:

“Let this day be celebrated each year in remembrance of this act of forgiveness and faith. Those who worship the Nagas on this day with love and respect shall always be protected from snakebite, fear, and misfortune.”

Since then, people across India observe Nag Panchami every year to honor the Nagas, to seek their blessings, and to remember the power of devotion, repentance, and forgiveness.

Moral of the Story

  • Respect all living beings - even those we fear.
  • Forgiveness is more powerful than revenge.
  • Faith and humility can move even the most fearsome of forces.

The Legend of Lord Krishna and Kaliya Naag

The Poisoned River

In the holy land of Vrindavan, the Yamuna River once flowed with crystal-clear water. But one day, it turned dark and foul-smelling. The reason? A fearsome multi-hooded serpent named Kaliya had taken residence in the river. Kaliya was so venomous that even the trees near the riverbank dried up, birds fell from the sky, and animals avoided the area. People and cattle began to fall ill, and the village of Gokul was in fear.

The Young Savior

The young boy Krishna, believed to be the incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu, lived in Gokul with his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda. Even as a child, Krishna was known for his divine powers and mischievous charm. One day, while playing with his friends near the riverbank, Krishna learned of the serpent’s menace. Seeing the devastation Kaliya had caused, Krishna decided to end the threat. Despite warnings, he leaped into the Yamuna River.

The Fierce Battle

As Krishna swam to the depths of the river, he was confronted by Kaliya, who attacked him with full force. A fierce battle took place underwater. Krishna, calm and powerful, wrapped himself around Kaliya’s neck, climbed atop his multiple hoods, and began to dance. With each step of Krishna’s divine feet, Kaliya’s strength weakened. Eventually, the serpent began to vomit blood and accepted defeat.

Redemption and Peace

Kaliya’s wives appeared, pleading with Krishna to spare their husband’s life. Moved by their devotion and humility, Krishna stopped. He forgave Kaliya but commanded him to leave the Yamuna and never return. Kaliya, grateful, left the river and disappeared into the depths of the ocean. The Yamuna became pure again, and the people of Gokul rejoiced.

Why This Story Matters on Nag Panchami

This tale is often told during Nag Panchami because it:

  • Symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.
  • Reflects Krishna’s compassion and forgiveness, even towards those who cause harm.
  • Reinforces the theme that even fearsome beings like serpents can be tamed with divine love and wisdom.

Spiritual Meaning

  • The many-headed serpent represents ego, fear, and negativity.
  • Krishna’s dance upon the serpent symbolizes the need to rise above inner poisons and purify our hearts.
  • The story teaches that no being is beyond redemption.

Below is the significance and benefits of each of the sevas

A) Sarpa Sukta Homa

What is Sarpa Sukta?

  • Sarpa Sukta refers to specific Vedic hymns dedicated to Nagas (divine serpents).
  • These mantras are primarily found in the Rig Veda and Atharva Veda and are chanted to invoke the blessings of serpents like Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Takshaka, Karkotaka, and others.

What is Sarpa Sukta Homa?

  • A Homa (fire ritual) in which Sarpa Sukta mantras are chanted and offerings are made into the sacred fire.
  • It is performed with great reverence to reduce or remove the negative karmic effects related to snakes or ancestral curses (Sarpa Dosha/Naga Dosha).
  • Usually conducted during Shravana masa, Nag Panchami, or on special astrological occasions like Ashlesha Nakshatra days.

Spiritual Significance

  • Pacifies Naga Devatas: Ensures you are in harmony with the elemental and astral forces governed by serpent deities.
  • Symbolic of Karmic Cleansing: Fire rituals dissolve accumulated past-life karmas, especially related to ancestral wrongdoings or neglected naga-related worship.
  • Aligns Kundalini Energy: Nagas are closely linked to Kundalini Shakti (serpent power) lying dormant at the base of the spine. The homa helps in spiritual awakening and energy purification.
  • Astrological Correction: It is specifically prescribed for those suffering from Kaal Sarpa Dosha, Naga Dosha, or those with troubling placements in Ashlesha, Rahu-Ketu axis, etc.
