Sevas we offer for Papankusha Ekadashi Puja 2026

Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

What Is Papankusha Ekadashi?

Papankusha Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the bright half of the Ashwayuja month, which comes right after Vijayadashami. It is also known as Pashankusha Ekadashi, Pasankusha Ekadashi and Ashwayuja Shukla Ekadashi. In North India it is called Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi.

The name has a clear meaning. “Papa” means sin and “Ankusha” is the iron hook used to guide an elephant. Just as the hook controls a huge elephant, this vrat is said to control the pull of past sins and wrong habits. On this day devotees worship Bhagwan Padmanabha, the form of Bhagwan Vishnu who rests on Shesha with a lotus rising from His navel.

Why Papankusha Ekadashi Is Special

The Puranas praise this Ekadashi as one that frees a person from papa and brings peace of mind. It is also believed to help the Pitru find peace. Many families keep this vrat for the well being of their ancestors and for a calm and steady life. The Puranas say that the merit of this single vrat is greater than many yajnas done without devotion.

Katha of Papankusha Ekadashi

The Puranas tell that Bhagwan Krishna himself explained this Ekadashi to Yudhishthira.

Long ago, in the Vindhya region, there lived a hunter named Krodhana. He spent his whole life in cruelty, anger and wrong deeds. When his last days came, he was filled with fear of Yama’s messengers. He ran to the sage Angira and begged for a way out.

The sage was kind to him. He asked Krodhana to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi with full faith and to worship Bhagwan Padmanabha. The hunter followed the vrat with a sincere heart. By the power of the vrat, his sins were washed away and he found the path to Bhagwan Vishnu.

The lesson is simple. It is never too late to turn towards Bhagwan. A true vrat done with faith can change the direction of a life.

Shatabhisha Nakshatra on Papankusha Ekadashi 2026

This year, the Ekadashi comes with Shatabhisha Nakshatra. The name means “a hundred healers”. This Nakshatra is ruled by Rahu and its devata is Varuna. In Jyotish, Shatabhisha is linked with healing, cleansing and a calm mind.

This makes the day good for prayers that release heavy thoughts and old karma. Rahu is often connected with confusion, fear and restless thinking. A Vishnu puja on this day is believed to bring steadiness and peace, especially for people who feel mentally unsettled or troubled by past burdens.
