Story of Rahu and Ketu (Mythological Background)

The story of Rahu and Ketu originates from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), as described in Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana and Mahabharata.

When the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean to obtain Amrita (nectar of immortality), Bhagwan Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, was distributing the nectar only to the Devas. A clever Asura named Swarbhanu disguised himself as a Deva and sat in line to receive the nectar.

As soon as he tasted a drop, the Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra) noticed the deception and alerted Vishnu, who instantly decapitated Swarbhanu with his Sudarshana Chakra. However, since Swarbhanu had already consumed a bit of the nectar, he became immortal. His head became Rahu, and his body became Ketu - and they were placed among the Navagrahas (nine planets).

Out of revenge, Rahu and Ketu continue to chase the Sun and Moon, occasionally, causing eclipses. Hence, they are considered shadow planets with strong karmic influence in astrology.

3. Offerings to Fire (Homa): Special herbs, ghee, and sacred items are offered into the fire while chanting Rahu and Ketu mantras (e.g., Om Raam Rahave Namaha, Om Kem Ketave Namaha).
4. Navagraha Pooja and Tarpana: Offerings to the other planets for balance and protection, and honoring of ancestors if required.
