Divine Story, Benefits, and Sacred Sevas of this Auspicious Puja

Saptashati Parayana refers to the ritualistic recitation of the Devi Mahatmyam (also known as Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path), a revered scripture of 700 verses (hence "Saptashati") from the Markandeya Purana, dedicated to Goddess Durga in her fierce and protective forms. This powerful text celebrates the victory of the Divine Mother over various demons, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Saptashati Parayana is the chanting of the Devi Mahatmyam, which is divided into 13 chapters and contains 700 verses. The text narrates three main stories:

  1. Madhu - Kaitabha Vadh (slaying of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha by Mahakali)
  2. Mahishasura Mardini (Durga slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura)
  3. Shumbha - Nishumbha Vadh (killing of the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha)

Each story symbolizes the destruction of internal enemies like ego, ignorance, greed, and arrogance by the Divine Feminine energy.

When Should One Do Saptashati Parayana?

Ideal Occasions:

  • Navaratri (especially Sharad Navaratri and Chaitra Navaratri)
